Undergraduate Programs<br />

History<br />

Requirements for a Major: 33 semester credits<br />

including HIST 101, 102, 111, 112, 400, and 18<br />

additional semester credits of history above the<br />

freshman level, including at least one of the following:<br />

HIST 220, 225, 230, 235.<br />

Requirements for a Minor: HIST 101, 102, 111,<br />

112 and three additional semester credits of history<br />

above the freshman level<br />

Requirements for a Teaching Major: <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

majoring in history and expecting to qualify for a<br />

certificate to teach history on the secondary level<br />

are required to take HIST 101, 102, 111, 112,<br />

400, and 18 additional semester credits above the<br />

freshman level, including at least one of the following:<br />

HIST 220, 225, 230, 235. The remaining<br />

credits should include a minimum of nine credits<br />

from U.S. history courses and a minimum of six<br />

credits from world history courses.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents are encouraged to take courses from<br />

other related areas but especially from the other<br />

social sciences. It is necessary to maintain a<br />

grade-point average of 3.0 in history with no<br />

grade lower than a C. Education courses required<br />

for a teaching major are found in the Education<br />

Department section.<br />

to the beginning of the modern period.<br />

Major historical developments from the beginning<br />

of the modern period to the present.<br />

+HIST 111. United <strong>St</strong>ates to 1865 3 credits<br />

Survey of United <strong>St</strong>ates history from the beginnings<br />

to the Civil War.<br />

WI = Writing intensive course<br />

+HIST 112. United <strong>St</strong>ates Since 1865 3 credits<br />

Survey of United <strong>St</strong>ates history from the Civil<br />

War to the present.<br />

+HIST 115. Topics in History 3 credits<br />

A cross-cultural survey of history with a topical<br />

focus designed for the first-year student.<br />

+HIST 140. History of Sport and<br />

Recreation<br />

3 credits<br />

A survey of western civilization with a focus on<br />

sporting and recreational pastimes. While learning<br />

much about sport and recreation from<br />

ancient times to the present day, students will<br />

also address major concepts in the history of classical<br />

civilizations, medieval and early modern<br />

Europe (including European encounters with<br />

indigenous societies in the Americas), the<br />

Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, urbanization,<br />

and the twentieth-century world. In the<br />

course of time, students should gain an appreciation<br />

of how sport both reflects its historical context<br />

and helps shape the future.<br />

History of modern China and Japan, emphasis<br />

on <strong>West</strong>ern impact and Eastern response.<br />

+HIST 225. The Modern Middle East 3 credits<br />

History of the Middle East and North Africa during<br />

the Islamic period. Origins of Islam, its development<br />

through the Ottoman era, with major<br />

emphasis on 20th century.<br />

+HIST 230. Modern Latin America 3 credits<br />

An introduction to Latin American history from<br />

1800 to the present.<br />

+HIST 235. Modern Africa<br />

3 credits<br />

An introduction to African history from 1800 to<br />

the present.<br />

+HIST 245. Catholicism in America 3 credits<br />

A study of the history of the Catholic Church in<br />

America with special emphasis on the lives of<br />

Catholic people. (Same as THEO 245)<br />
