Undergraduate Programs<br />

completed health form that includes a health history,<br />

a physical examination by a physician, and<br />

immunization dates. Because of clinical agency<br />

requirements and Centers for Disease Control<br />

and Prevention recommendations, the Nursing<br />

Department also requires a completed Hepatitis B<br />

immunization series; proof of immunization or<br />

documented immunity to Rubeola (measles),<br />

Rubella (German measles), and Varicella (chickenpox);<br />

and annual TB testing.<br />

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)<br />

Certification<br />

Nursing students are required to possess CPR<br />

certification prior to practice in a clinical agency.<br />

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain this certification<br />

and provide proof of such to the<br />

Administrative Assistant in the Department of<br />

Nursing at the beginning of each academic year.<br />

National <strong>St</strong>udent Nurses Association (NSNA)<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong> Department of Nursing<br />

students are required to belong to the National<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Nurses Association (NSNA). NSNA is<br />

the largest independent student nursing organization<br />

in the country and is organized at the<br />

national, state and local levels. NSNA provides<br />

students with opportunities to practice self-governance;<br />

advocate for student rights and the rights<br />

of patients; and take collective, responsible action<br />

on vital social and political issues.<br />

Health Insurance<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents must provide proof of health care insurance<br />

coverage. <strong>St</strong>udents without health care<br />

insurance will need to sign a waiver releasing the<br />

<strong>University</strong> from fiscal responsibility if injured<br />

during tenure in nursing program. <strong>St</strong>udent may<br />

be ineligible to proceed in nursing program if an<br />

agency requires health insurance. The National<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Nurse Association offers affordable<br />

health care coverage.<br />

Malpractice Insurance Coverage<br />

Basic students will be charged a fee of approximately<br />

$15 to cover the cost of group malpractice<br />

insurance coverage. This fee will be collected<br />

at the beginning of each academic year.<br />

Participation in group malpractice insurance coverage<br />

allows a better rate and ensures that all students<br />

are covered when in the nursing program.<br />

RN students must provide documentation of<br />

their malpractice insurance coverage to the<br />

Administrative Assistant at the start of the nursing<br />

program and after each renewal. RNs without<br />

individual coverage may request to be covered<br />

with basic students in the group malpractice<br />

insurance policy provided they make this request<br />

at the time of registration.<br />

Fees<br />

NURS 160, 260, 300, 352, and 354 will have a<br />

$20 lab fee. Each of these courses will require an<br />

additional $20–$30 for an equipment kit. Other<br />

costs include: NSNA Membership—$40,<br />

Malpractice Insurance—$15, Diagnostic Test<br />

Fee—$50, Criminal Background Check—<br />

$20–$40, Uniform and Name Pin—approximately<br />

$105.<br />

Additional costs will be associated with<br />

required immunizations, required student participation<br />

at an <strong>Iowa</strong> Board of Nursing Meeting<br />

($20–$100) and a trip to <strong>Iowa</strong> City for<br />

Progressive Nursing <strong>St</strong>udent Day ($5–$10), lab<br />

coats, dissection kits, textbooks and current CPR<br />

certification. Personal health insurance coverage<br />

must be documented for clinical experiences.<br />

<strong>St</strong>arting with the junior year use of an automobile<br />

will be necessary for transportation to<br />

regional clinical education sites.<br />

Professional Licensure<br />

It is the student’s responsibility to apply in a<br />

timely manner to individual state licensing agencies<br />

for licensure as a registered nurse. All application<br />

and examination fees are borne by the<br />

license applicant. Licensing agencies routinely<br />

require information concerning felony and misde-<br />
