Undergraduate Programs<br />

Education courses required for a teaching major<br />

are found in the Education Department section.<br />

Requirements for the Pre-Law Certificate Program:<br />

33 semester credits, 27 of which are<br />

beyond general education requirements, including:<br />

ACCT 201, 202; ECON 202; any 300-level<br />

writing or literature course; PHIL 201, 210; any<br />

four of PSCI 102, 103, 110, 304, 316, 330, 360.<br />

A minimum 2.0 grade-point average is required<br />

of the courses needed to complete the program.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents are strongly encouraged to make the<br />

following choices in their general education<br />

courses: PHIL 207, 210; HIST 111; PSCI 101<br />

and ECON 201.<br />

Requirements for a Minor in Political Science:<br />

15 semester credits of political science including<br />

PSCI 101 and 102.<br />

+PSCI 101. Government of the<br />

United <strong>St</strong>ates I<br />

3 credits<br />

The constitution, presidency, congress, courts,<br />

and citizen participation in the political system.<br />

This course satisfies requirements for a teacher’s<br />

certificate in <strong>Iowa</strong> and Illinois.<br />

+PSCI 102. Government of the<br />

United <strong>St</strong>ates II<br />

3 credits<br />

Survey of American policy problems in such<br />

areas as civil rights, foreign policy, the economy,<br />

regulation and subsidization, and poverty.<br />

+PSCI 103. Politics in Film<br />

3 credits<br />

The portrayal of American government through<br />

Hollywood film productions. Comparison and<br />

contrast of American politics as presented in<br />

movies with the text book approach of how government<br />

“really” works.<br />

PSCI 110. Law and Society<br />

3 credits<br />

Introduction to character and organization of the<br />

American legal system. Readings include descriptions<br />

of the nature of a legal education and<br />

examination of cases and controversies regarding<br />

nature of law, proper role of the judicial system,<br />

and relationship of law and social change.<br />

Electoral Policies<br />

Examination of voting behavior and workings of<br />

American party system. Special focus on recent<br />

presidential elections.<br />

Survey of leading decisions of Supreme Court,<br />

indicating development of judicial power and<br />

limitations on government.<br />

human rights, civil rights and personal freedoms.<br />

PSCI 307. History of Political<br />

Thought I<br />

Ideas of great theorists from Plato to Rousseau.<br />

Prerequisite: PSCI 101 or instructor permission.<br />

PSCI 308. History of Political<br />

Thought II<br />

3 credits<br />

Ideas of great theorists of modern political<br />

thought from Burke to Marx. Prerequisite:<br />

PSCI 101 or instructor permission.<br />

Behavior of nations in international political system<br />

and problems of war, peace, justice, change,<br />

and international organization. Current international<br />

problems analyzed in perspective of theoretical<br />

concerns discussed.<br />

Case study of principles of modern international<br />
