Graduate Level Grading System<br />

The Graduate Council has approved the following<br />

as the acceptable description of grades and<br />

grade quality points. Some programs may not use<br />

the entire range of grades. <strong>St</strong>udents should refer<br />

to their departmental program student handbook<br />

for grading policies specific to<br />

their area of study.<br />

A Superior performance<br />

A- ; B+, B Suitably proficient performance<br />

B-; C+, C Marginal performance<br />

C-; D Unsatisfactory performance<br />

F Failure<br />

P Passing work completed in a course<br />

where the student is registered<br />

Pass/No Pass<br />

NP Not passing work completed in a<br />

course where the student is registered<br />

Pass/No Pass<br />

Note: With regard to “P” and “NP” grades, a<br />

“P” grade would indicate work equivalent to an<br />

A, B, or C. An “NP” grade would indicate work<br />

equivalent to a D or F. If further clarification of a<br />

“P” or “NP” grade is required, such as when a<br />

student transfers coursework to another program<br />

or institution, the student should consult with the<br />

director of the program in which she or he<br />

earned the Pass/No Pass grade.<br />

W Withdrawal from a course (not a<br />

grade)<br />

WF Withdrawal from a course while<br />

doing failing work<br />

WP Withdrawal from a course while<br />

doing passing work<br />

Incomplete <strong>St</strong>udent does not complete all course<br />

requirements (grade must be amended<br />

in accordance with regular university<br />

and graduate program policies.)<br />

IP In Progress work (for students in<br />

courses that are not expected to be<br />

completed within the normal semester,<br />

i.e. Special Education Thesis. See<br />

explanation below.)<br />

Note: An “IP” grade is to be used with courses<br />

that are not expected to be completed within a<br />

regular academic semester. Courses seeking to<br />

use this grade are approved by the Educational<br />

Policies Committee. Courses approved to use this<br />

grade have a notation within their course description.<br />

The requirements for use of this grade are<br />

as follows:<br />

1. Completion of course work is limited to one<br />

academic year from date of enrollment.<br />

2. This grade will carry “Resident Credit” that<br />

can be used to meet financial aid and loan<br />

deferment requirements for one academic year<br />

from date of enrollment.<br />

3. Satisfactory progress has to be confirmed by<br />

the department chair at the beginning of each<br />

semester within the academic year.<br />

4. If the work is not completed within one academic<br />

year, the student will have to re-enroll in<br />

the course and accept all financial consequences<br />

of this action.<br />

X Absence from the final examination (a schedule<br />

of completion is to be worked out in<br />

accordance with regular <strong>University</strong> and graduate<br />
