After successful completion of the<br />

examination, the individual will become a<br />

Certified Orthotist (CO). In addition, some states<br />

require licensure in order to practice. However,<br />

state licenses are usually based on the results of<br />

the ABC certification examination.<br />

Preparing for Master of Orthotic Science <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

The Department of Orthotic Science selects applicants<br />

for admission to the master of orthotic science<br />

program based on cumulative GPA, prerequisite<br />

GPA, plan of prerequisite completion, documented<br />

observation and experience, extracurricular<br />

honors and awards, personal essay, letters of<br />

professional reference and an on-campus personal<br />

interview.<br />

Prerequisite course work in the sciences and<br />

mathematics, communications and behavioral sciences,<br />

and the liberal arts is usually completed<br />

during the first three years of college-level work.<br />

A master of orthotic science applicant should<br />

have completed the majority of prerequisite classes<br />

before applying for admission into the MOS<br />

program.<br />

Most of the following prerequisite course<br />

work should be completed at the time of application<br />

to the MOS program. A student may have<br />

up to nine semester credits of these prerequisites<br />

pending (be enrolled in the courses and expect<br />

successful completion) at the time of application.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents who have not completed a baccalaureate<br />

degree need to complete the majority of <strong>St</strong>.<br />

<strong>Ambrose</strong>’s general education requirements at the<br />

time of application. For acceptance to the Master<br />

of Orthotic Science degree program, students<br />

need to document a plan for completion of<br />

remaining courses indicating completion of the<br />

baccalaureate degree prior to enrollment in the<br />

second year of the MOS program. The plan of<br />

completion must be approved by the program<br />

director.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents who have completed a bachelor’s<br />

degree from another institution are not required<br />

to complete <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s general education<br />

requirements. However, these students<br />

must complete the Master of Orthotic Science<br />

prerequisite requirements.<br />

The MOS program is offered in both “3+2”<br />

and “4+2” curriculum formats. In the “3+2” format,<br />

the first three years are spent completing the<br />

general education requirements, the core courses<br />

for undergraduate major and the prerequisites for<br />

the MOS program. The baccalaureate degree<br />

must be completed prior to enrollment in the second<br />

year of the MOS professional program or a<br />

plan of completion approved by the program<br />

director.<br />

In the “4+2” format, students have completed<br />

their baccalaureate degree or graduate degree and<br />

have completed all of the prerequisites for the<br />

MOS program. For either the “3+2” or “4+2”<br />
