Undergraduate Programs<br />

Requirements for an Art Education Teaching<br />

Major K–6 or 7–12: <strong>St</strong>udents majoring in art and<br />

expecting to qualify for a license to teach art at<br />

the elementary or secondary level are required to<br />

take ART 100, 200, 201, 205, 206, 207, 208,<br />

220, 251, 303, 305, 330, 340, 342 and 351.<br />

Education course requirements are found in the<br />

Education Department section.<br />

The Schatz Wildlife Art Scholarship, Meerbusch,<br />

Germany This art scholarship is given to<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> art students for study abroad. This<br />

is a credit course. Professor Manfred Schatz will<br />

take students for painting and drawing instruction<br />

in his Meerbusch studio for two to three<br />

weeks during the summer months. Host German<br />

families will house and feed students in their<br />

home for this period. Scholarship includes roundtrip<br />

airfare from Moline, Ill., to Dusseldorf,<br />

Germany. <strong>St</strong>udents may apply to the Art<br />

Department chair. Recipients will be selected<br />

through the president’s scholarship committee.<br />

Course Descriptions<br />

#ART 100. Drawing Introduction 3 credits<br />

A course in the basics of the visual language as<br />

expressed in drawing. <strong>St</strong>udents initially draw<br />

from direct observation using a variety of media.<br />

Lessons progress to increasingly expressive interpretations<br />

of content. Concentration on pictorial<br />

composition and technical fluency.<br />

#ART 150. Survey of Art <strong>St</strong>udio 2 credits<br />

Non-art majors only. This course offers hands-on<br />

studio experience in a variety of art media and<br />

familiarity with common art terminology and<br />

basic art history.<br />

#ART 200. Calligraphy<br />

3 credits<br />

An introductory study of Root Alphabets of<br />

<strong>West</strong>ern calligraphy, utilizing shaded writing<br />

implements such as steel and felt-tipped pens,<br />

and brushes for writing and lettering. An understanding<br />

of page design is developed as letter<br />

forms, page decoration and illumination are combined.<br />

Eight to twelve alphabets studied.<br />

#ART 201. <strong>St</strong>udio Fundamentals:<br />

Painting<br />

3 credits<br />

Basic painting principles are investigated using<br />

the tools and techniques of tempera, acrylic and<br />

watercolor paints. Paintings are created from<br />

both observation and imagination. <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

include the value scale, color theory, and color<br />

interaction.<br />

ART 205. <strong>St</strong>udio Fundamentals:<br />

Computers in Art<br />

3 credits<br />

An introductory course dealing with the ways in<br />

which the computer can be applied to the artistic<br />

process. Basic drawing, painting ,photo-manipulation<br />

,and publishing techniques will be<br />

explored. Prerequisite: ART 100.<br />

ART 206. <strong>St</strong>udio Fundamentals:<br />

2-D Design 3 credits<br />

An Introductory course exploring two-dimensional<br />

design concepts and processes. Emphasis is on<br />

the examination of the basic elements of design<br />

and the principles of expression involved with<br />

their use. The course provides an investigation of<br />

the ways abstraction delivers meaning.<br />

Prerequisite: ART 100.<br />

ART 207. <strong>St</strong>udio Fundamentals:<br />

Drawing<br />

3 credits<br />

An exploration of the expressive possibilities of<br />

representational image making. Special emphasis<br />

on the physical effects of light, linear perspective,<br />

elementary figure composition and the creation of<br />

narrative. Prerequisite: ART 100.<br />

ART 208. <strong>St</strong>udio Fundamentals:<br />

3-D Design 2 credits<br />

Introductory level course involving the interpretation<br />

and application of the basic principles of<br />

three-dimensional design to a variety of problem<br />

solving experiences. Emphasis on conceptual<br />

growth and personal expression through the<br />

investigation of the expressive nature of materials.<br />

Prerequisite: ART 100.<br />
