6. Providing the attainment of college-level learning<br />

from life and work experience. (For further<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong> permits a maximum of<br />

60 equivalency credits for non-classroom learning<br />

to be applied to a degree or the equivalent of 90<br />

semester credits for a combination of classroom<br />

and non-classroom learning done elsewhere.<br />

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong> recognizes the five general<br />

examinations and most of the subject examinations<br />

of the College-Level Examination Program<br />

of the College Board.<br />

CLEP credits may be used to fulfill general<br />

education and elective requirements. They also<br />

may be used to fulfill major requirements with<br />

Departmental approval. Credits are not given for<br />

introductory courses when there are previouslyearned<br />

credits for a more advanced course in the<br />

same area.<br />

CLEP examinations are administered at<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong> on a regularly scheduled<br />

basis. This schedule is available in the <strong>St</strong>udent<br />

Success Center. Arrangements for taking the<br />

examinations must be made three weeks in<br />

advance of the date of administration.<br />

Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> has established a system for assessing<br />

and crediting prior experiential learning if<br />

you are an adult student who brings practical<br />

knowledge and experience when you come to the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

If you can demonstrate to the satisfaction of<br />

an expert in a given field that you have gained<br />

college-level learning outside the college classroom,<br />

you may be are able to obtain equivalency<br />

credits applicable to a degree. These credits may<br />

or may not be transferable to other colleges.<br />

Methods of demonstrating prior experiential<br />

learning include portfolio development or special<br />

examination by department. For further information<br />

about policies and procedures on assessment<br />

of prior experiential learning, contact the<br />

Professional Development Center.<br />

Special Programs<br />

Health Services Programs<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> offers directed preparation for programs<br />

in medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry,<br />

medical technology, and veterinary medicine.<br />

Biology Department, chair of the Chemistry<br />

Department, or the director of Admissions.<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> also has several variations of programs<br />

to prepare for entry into a school of chiropractic<br />

study. For information, contact the<br />

Biology Department.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udy Abroad Programs<br />

The <strong>St</strong>udy Abroad Office helps students plan<br />

study abroad as part of their academic program.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents can earn up to 30 credit hours per year<br />

and may satisfy some general education or major<br />

requirements while living and studying abroad. In<br />

addition to many accredited programs through<br />

other colleges and universities, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> holds<br />

a long-time affiliation with Central College in<br />

Pella, <strong>Iowa</strong>, and its study abroad programs in<br />

France, Mexico, China, Spain, Austria, Holland,<br />

England and Wales. Through Loyola <strong>University</strong><br />

in Chicago, students can study in Rome.<br />

There are also reciprocal exchanges with<br />

Maynooth College and Portobello College in<br />

Ireland and the Centro de Estudios<br />

Interamericanos in Cuenca, Ecuador, for a semester<br />

or academic year. At times, there are groups<br />

going abroad led by SAU faculty. More information<br />

is available from the <strong>St</strong>udy Abroad Office.<br />

Pre-Law Program and Certificate<br />

There are a number of courses about law at<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> to help students decide whether to<br />

seek professional specialization as a lawyer. A<br />

guided program of pre-legal studies also is available<br />

to prepare students for law school. Pre-law<br />

advising is available through the Political Science<br />
