ART 210. Graphic Design I<br />

3 credits<br />

Design theory, layout, and the creative process<br />

come together to add purpose and meaning to a<br />

variety of visual communications. Fundamentals<br />

of typography are explored. Prerequisites: ART<br />

205, 206, 231, 233 or permission of instructor<br />

#ART 220. Introduction to Prints 3 credits<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents learn to make prints using a variety of<br />

media such as monoprint, intaglio, lithography,<br />

relief printing and silk-screen. A brief history of<br />

each medium with key artists will be included.<br />

ART 231. Survey of Advertising<br />

Principles<br />

3 credits<br />

Principles of design as used in printed advertising.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents create layouts in a variety of contexts.<br />

Newspaper, magazine, poster-style and<br />

direct mail advertising will be investigated.<br />

#ART 233. Photography I<br />

3 credits<br />

Beginning course in black & white photography.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent will use their own camera (35mm manually<br />

operated SLR) as a creative tool for personal<br />

investigation and storytelling. Film exposure and<br />

development, print enlargement and basic pictorial<br />

composition are covered. Color use will be<br />

briefly introduced.<br />

ART 234. Photography II<br />

3 credits<br />

Advanced course for students with experience in<br />

basic photography. Personal projects in photo<br />

journalism, commercial studio practice and art<br />

photography will be completed. Prerequisite:<br />

ART 233 or permission of instructor.<br />

#ART 250. Art Through the Ages I 3 credits<br />

Introductory chronological survey of history of<br />

art from prehistoric times through Middle Ages<br />

#ART 251. Art Through the Ages II 3 credits<br />

Introductory chronological survey of history of<br />

art from the Renaissance to the Modern World.<br />

ART 303. Figure Composition and<br />

Anatomy<br />

3 credits<br />

A studio course concerned with the analysis of<br />

the skeletal, muscular and surface anatomy of the<br />

human form. Skeletons, plaster casts and live<br />

models will be used. Prerequisites: ART 206,<br />

207.<br />

ART 304. Figure Drawing<br />

3 credits<br />

Intensive study of the human figure and its<br />

expressive potential. Experimentation with a<br />

variety of media and techniques. Prerequisites:<br />

206, 207, 303.<br />

#ART 305. Ceramics<br />

3 credits<br />

An introduction to working in clay with projects<br />

in pinch, coil, and slab methods as well as press<br />

and drape molded pieces. Wheel throwing will be<br />

briefly introduced.<br />

ART 306. Illustration<br />

3 credits<br />

<strong>St</strong>udy of the uses of drawing, painting and other<br />

media in commercial art. Techniques, and contexts<br />

of illustration will be explored along with<br />

its major practitioners, past and present.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 201, 206, 207.<br />

ART 310. Graphic Design II<br />

3 credits<br />

Advanced study of type and image as they relate<br />

to problem solving within a professional practice.<br />

Design methodology, 4-color process and production<br />

techniques are studied. Prerequisites:<br />

ART 207, 210.<br />

ART 319. Special Topics in<br />

Art History<br />

1–6 credits<br />

Individual study open to junior and senior art<br />

students wishing to do further research in art history<br />

and research methodology. Permission of<br />

instructor required.<br />

ART 330. Painting I<br />

3 credits<br />

Painting I is designed to provide a strong foundation<br />

for the study of oil painting. A thorough<br />

understanding of the techniques, materials and<br />

concepts is presented as awareness of the medium’s<br />

expressive possibilities is developed.<br />
