MOT 540. Occupational Therapy<br />

with Adults<br />

5 credits<br />

This course addresses the OT process from referral<br />

to discontinuation of services for adults in the<br />

settings in which they are served. All aspects of<br />

the adult population are examined when choosing<br />

an appropriate frame of reference, assessment<br />

and evaluation tools, developing a treatment plan<br />

and goals and planning for discharge. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

study in further detail the theories of remediation/restoration,<br />

compensation/adaptation and<br />

prevention and wellness approaches. Prerequisite:<br />

MOT 470.<br />

MOT 545. Research I<br />

2 credits<br />

The student will critically examine and develop<br />

an appreciation for the impact of research in the<br />

profession of OT. Skills in information searching,<br />

grant writing, research question development,<br />

clinical application of research to practice, and<br />

writing skills necessary for publication will be<br />

addressed. This is the first course in a four course<br />

sequence focusing on research in OT.<br />

MOT 550. Applied Orthotics<br />

2 credits<br />

This course is designed to evaluate, design, and<br />

fabricate orthotic devices as applied to injuries<br />

and pathologies in the upper extremity. This<br />

course will address the use of orthotic devices to<br />

promote engagement in occupational activities.<br />

Prerequisite: MOT 440.<br />

MOT 560. Occupational <strong>St</strong>udies III 3 credits<br />

The essential occupations of older adults are<br />

studied to understand their developmental forms,<br />

bio-psycho-social functions, and contextual<br />

meanings. This course continues to develop a rich<br />

understanding of the relationships between<br />

health, growth and development, and occupational<br />

activity. Finally, assessment and therapeutic<br />

strategies for optimizing occupational engagement<br />

for this population are studied, including<br />

remediation/restoration interventions, compensation/<br />

adaptation interventions, disease/disability<br />

prevention interventions, and wellness promotion<br />

interventions. Prerequisite: MOT 530.<br />

MOT 565. Field Experience<br />

with Older Adults I<br />

1 credit<br />

Group leadership skills following a seven-step<br />

format will be developed. <strong>St</strong>udents will gain an<br />

understanding of group dynamics including<br />

group process, development, norms and roles,<br />

termination when interacting with an older adult<br />

population. Examination of occupational therapy<br />

group theories and frames of reference that relate<br />

to the older adult population will occur through<br />

community involvement in leading an older adult<br />

group. Prerequisite: MOT 535.<br />

MOT 566. Field Experience with<br />

Older Adults II<br />

2 credits<br />

This course will include both field experience and<br />

classroom activities. <strong>St</strong>udents will be placed in<br />

settings that serve the elderly. They will have the<br />

opportunity to observe and interact with individuals<br />

and with groups. In the classroom, students<br />

will have the opportunity to discuss and synthesize<br />

their experiences. Prerequisite: MOT 535.<br />

MOT 570. Occupational Therapy with<br />

Older Adults<br />

5 credits<br />

This course addresses the occupational therapy<br />

process from referral to discontinuation of services<br />

of older adults and the settings in which<br />

they are served. It studies in-depth the older adult<br />

and the impact that normal aging, disease or disability<br />

has on this population. In addition, the<br />

social, economic, political, geographic and demographic<br />

issues unique to older adults are<br />

explored. Prerequisite: MOT 540.<br />

MOT 575. Research II<br />

3 credits<br />

The student will critically examine current<br />

Occupational therapy literature and develop a<br />

research proposal with faculty guidance to further<br />

explore during this course and MOT 600 -<br />

Occupational Therapy Research III & MOT 645<br />

Occupational Therapy Research IV. Upon question<br />

identification, various research activities will<br />

be initiated by the student to emphasize the bene-<br />
