needs will be discussed. <strong>St</strong>rategies for identification<br />

and prevention of professional and care<br />

giver burnout will be presented.<br />

MPT 605. Teaching Practicum (Elective) 1 credit<br />

This course is offered to MPT students desiring<br />

to gain experience in academic teaching. It consists<br />

of supervised academic teaching experiences<br />

and seminars. <strong>St</strong>udents will assist the instructor<br />

in the design, set-up and presentation of academic<br />

lectures and laboratories to underclassmen<br />

within the MPT program. The seminars are concerned<br />

with issues related to the development of<br />

effective teaching skills.<br />

MPT 610. Pathology and Medical<br />

Management I<br />

4 credits<br />

This course provides an overview of the medical<br />

management of common clinical disorders<br />

encountered by PTs. Presentations by primary<br />

and specialized medical/health science practitioners<br />

will include elements related to pathology,<br />

patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, referral<br />

and prognosis. Practitioner perspectives on the<br />

roles of physical therapists in the management of<br />

specific disorders will also be presented.<br />

MPT 620. Musculoskeletal<br />

Therapeutics I<br />

5 credits<br />

This therapeutics course is responsible for assessment<br />

and treatment of the musculoskeletal system.<br />

Impairments of the musculoskeletal system<br />

will be evaluated with regard to interventions<br />

and return to the patient’s highest or desired level<br />

of function. Life span issues and disease will be<br />

considered in determining level of intervention<br />

and prognosis.<br />

MPT 630. Neuromuscular Therapeutics 5 credits<br />

The focus of this course is on the physical therapy<br />

management of patients across the life span<br />

with neuromuscular disorders related to injury<br />

(e.g., cerebral vascular accident, traumatic brain<br />

injury, spinal cord injury) congenital anomalies<br />

or degeneration (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, multiple<br />

sclerosis) of central and peripheral components<br />

of the neuromuscular system. Elements<br />

related to examination, evaluation, diagnosis,<br />

prognosis, intervention and outcomes will be<br />

highlighted. Concepts related to motor control<br />

and motor learning will be incorporated throughout<br />

the course. Related research will be used to<br />

support assessment and interventions of outcomes.<br />

MPT 635. Health Promotion and<br />

Prevention<br />

3 credits<br />

This course focuses on the principles of health<br />

promotion, wellness and adult fitness. Emphasis<br />

is placed on risk stratification and methods to<br />

identify patients at risk for cardiovascular, pulmonary,<br />

and metabolic disorders. Essentials of<br />

human physiology and exercise physiology are<br />

reviewed to prepare the student for content in<br />

MPT 640.<br />

MPT 640. Cardiopulmonary<br />

Therapeutics<br />

3 credits<br />

This course covers tests, measures and interventions<br />

used by physical therapists for patients and<br />

clients with cardiovascular and pulmonary<br />

impairments. Emphasis is placed on techniques<br />

and theories of patient management across the<br />

life span.<br />

MPT 650. Issues in Research I 3 credits<br />

This course is the first in a three course series<br />

that covers topics relevant to the research<br />

process. Topics include identification and development<br />

of research questions, review of literature,<br />

research design, and an introduction to<br />

analyses commonly encountered in physical therapy<br />

literature. Information is presented to further<br />

enhance the student’s understanding of the scientific<br />

method, laboratory research and clinical<br />
