Services for <strong>St</strong>udents with Disabilities<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents with disabilities may contact the Office<br />

of Services for <strong>St</strong>udents with Disabilities for a<br />

variety of services and reasonable accommodations<br />

intended to reduce the effects that a disability<br />

may have on their performance in a traditional<br />

academic setting. Services do not lower course<br />

standards or alter degree requirements but give<br />

students a better opportunity to demonstrate<br />

their academic abilities.<br />

Services include readers, scribes, note-takers,<br />

sign language interpreters, alternate exam<br />

arrangements, advocacy, academic advising,<br />

books on tape, screening and referral for diagnosis<br />

of a disability, and liaison with other<br />

<strong>University</strong> and state agencies. A learning disabilities<br />

specialist and graduate assistants provide<br />

one-to-one learning skills instruction. The<br />

<strong>University</strong> also has an FM hearing assistance system<br />

for the Galvin Fine Arts Center and Christ<br />

the King Chapel. Personal transmitters and<br />

receivers are available for the classroom.<br />

Accommodations are not limited to those<br />

above. <strong>St</strong>udents are encouraged to meet with the<br />

coordinator to discuss services that will allow<br />

equal access to the opportunities provided by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Services Division<br />

The staff of <strong>St</strong>udent Services is dedicated to the<br />

total development of the student. The goal is to<br />

assist in enhancing the quality of life and personal<br />

development of all students while attending<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The departments of the<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Services division provide a variety of services<br />

to support students as they pursue their<br />

comprehensive education. <strong>St</strong>udents are encouraged<br />

to participate in the student life activities<br />

and in the comprehensive programs provided by<br />

the <strong>St</strong>udent Services Office.<br />

Through the offices of the Dean of <strong>St</strong>udents,<br />

Counseling, Health Services, Intramural Sports,<br />

Residence Life, <strong>St</strong>udent Activities, and Security,<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Services seeks to meet the academic,<br />

physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of<br />

all <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> students.<br />

Counseling Center<br />

The Counseling Center provides individual and<br />

group counseling for a wide variety of personal<br />

and interpersonal difficulties. In addition, the<br />

center provides a unique opportunity for students<br />

who are pursuing their own personal growth. All<br />

services are both free and confidential.<br />

Health Services<br />

Located on the lower level of Cosgrove Hall, the<br />

Office of Health Services is staffed by a registered<br />

nurse who provides health care services for the<br />

students, faculty and staff at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong>. The<br />

nurse assesses health needs of clients and makes<br />

appropriate referrals when necessary. All services<br />

are free of charge.<br />

Intramural and Recreational Sports<br />

Located on the. second floor of the Lee Lohman<br />

Arena, the Intramural and Recreational Sports<br />

Office coordinates all intramural sports activities<br />

throughout the year, including volleyball, racquetball,<br />

golf, basketball, bowling, flag football,<br />

and many more. Each year, over 25 sports are<br />

offered.<br />

Residence Life<br />

Located in the <strong>St</strong>udent Services building, the<br />

Office of Residence Life exists as an integral part<br />

of the educational programs and academic support<br />

at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong>. To assist with meeting these<br />

goals, resident advisors (RAs) serve as live-in student<br />

advisors who are trained to assist with<br />

problems. In addition, RAs program activities<br />

and create a sense of community on each floor.<br />

In addition, Residence Life is staffed with a fulltime<br />

Area Coordinator, two full-time Hall<br />

Directors, and one Graduate Assistant Hall<br />

Director, all of whom are available to students.<br />
