aids and services (including an introduction<br />

to adaptive technology), psychosocial aspects of<br />

disability, program development, and program<br />

evaluation. Because over 40 percent of college<br />

students with disabilities have learning disabilities,<br />

the course will emphasize programming for<br />

students with learning disabilities. Additionally,<br />

students will learn about coordinating services<br />

and directing an office within a college/university.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will see how such an office operates as<br />

part of the college or university administration.<br />

Prerequisite: Graduate status.<br />

SPED 673. Administration of Community<br />

Agency Programs<br />

4 credits<br />

This course is designed to familiarize students<br />

with various community organizations that support<br />

adults with disabilities. Emphasis is placed<br />

on specific organizations within the Quad Cities<br />

area and the specific services they provide, their<br />

organizational structure, funding, and service<br />

philosophy. The course is intended for students<br />

interested in working within organizations that<br />

support the full participation of individuals with<br />

disabilities into community life. Prerequisite:<br />

SPED 671.<br />

SPED 674. Legal Aspects of Adult Disability<br />

Services<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to familiarize students<br />

with Federal and <strong>St</strong>ate laws that prohibit discrimination<br />

against individuals with disabilities. The<br />

emphasis will be on the Individuals with<br />

Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), The<br />

Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans<br />

with Disabilities Act (ADA). Class discussion will<br />

focus on how these laws have determined the<br />

types of support individuals receive and how services<br />

are provided. Additionally, students will<br />

learn to apply their knowledge of laws and legal<br />

cases to develop college/university policies and<br />

procedures. Prerequisite: SPED 671 or equivalent.<br />

SPED 675. Psycho-Educational Assessment of<br />

Adults<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to enable students to use<br />

standardized test results they see in psycho-educational<br />

test reports. Use of these reports is an<br />

integral part of every postsecondary disability<br />

service office. <strong>St</strong>udents will learn to administer<br />

and interpret the most popular (and valid) psycho-educational<br />

tests used in the post-secondary<br />

setting. These tests include: the Wechsler Adult<br />

Intelligence Scale (Third Edition – WAIS-III); the<br />

Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement –<br />

Revised; and Woodcock-Johnson tests of<br />

Cognitive Ability – Revised. Other tests, such as<br />

the Wechlser Memory Scale (Third Test, Fourth<br />

Edition), and others, will be discussed.<br />

Prerequisite: SPED 511.<br />

SPED 676. Assistive Technology 2 credits<br />

Designed for graduate students seeking to work<br />

in postsecondary institutions with adults with<br />

disabilities, this course covers various aspects of<br />

assistive technology used for individuals with disabilities.<br />

Focus will be on identifying, purchasing,<br />

and using various types of assistive devices at the<br />

postsecondary level. Prerequisites: SPED 672,<br />

674, or employment in disability services and the<br />

consent of the instructor.<br />

SPED 679. Internship in<br />

Adult Services<br />

1–6 credits<br />

(Repeatable—must have six credits to complete<br />

program). Prerequisites: SPED 511, SPED 671,<br />

SPED 672, or 673, 674, 675, 676, EDUC 610,<br />

and SPED 660 or EDUC 556.<br />

SPED 688. Practicum in Multicategorical Special<br />

Class with Integration-Elementary (SCI) 3 credits<br />

This course provides students with field experience<br />

working in elementary programs for students<br />

in multicategorical SCI settings. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

will obtain practical first-hand experience of<br />

working with curriculum and teaching strategies.<br />

Prerequisites: SPED 210 or equivalent, SPED<br />

510, 511, 514, 621, 631, 641, teacher certifica-<br />
