Internship<br />

3 credits<br />

Guided internship in public administration or<br />

public service taken through the department in<br />

which the student develops an applied concentration.<br />

Internship emphasizes field experience,<br />

observation, and research under professional<br />

supervision in human services agencies.<br />

Prerequisites: Junior or senior public administration<br />

majors or minors, and approval of the public<br />

administration director.<br />

Course Description<br />

SVLN 201. Service Learning<br />

1 credit<br />

Offers students an opportunity to apply their<br />

academic learning in a setting of community service.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents complete 25 hours of service, participate<br />

in regular reflection periods and complete<br />

a final project. One credit course may be taken<br />

up to three times for a total of 3 credits. Pass/No<br />

Pass grade. The volunteer service is determined<br />

by the student from a list approved by the course<br />

instructor and SVLN coordinator. Prerequisite:<br />

Specific course prerequisites and co-requisites are<br />

determined by participating academic departments.<br />

Requirements for a Major: 30 semester credits of<br />

sociology, including SOC 101, 213, 381, 385.<br />

Requirements for a Minor: 15 semester credits of<br />

sociology, including SOC 101 and nine semester<br />

credits of 300-level courses.<br />

Requirements for a Secondary Teaching Major<br />

(7–12): 33 semester credits in sociology including<br />

SOC 101, 204, 310, 313, 320, 341, 366, and 12<br />

semester credits of electives in the social sciences.<br />

+SOC 101. Introduction to Sociology 3 credits<br />

Essential characteristics of life in society, including<br />

culture, socialization, subcultures, primary<br />

and secondary relations, stratification, face-toface<br />

interaction, large-scale organizations, conflict,<br />

deviance and social change.<br />

+SOC 204. Social Problems<br />

3 credits<br />

Analyzing and solving major social problems in<br />

the U.S. and the world: racism, sexism, overpopulation,<br />

poverty, crime, war and other problems.<br />

SOC 228. Cultural Anthropology 3 credits<br />

A cross-cultural examination of those structures<br />

in society which are common to all groups: family,<br />

subsistence strategies and distribution of<br />

wealth, political arrangements, religion, art, science<br />

and technology. Through focused study of<br />

the multi-level struggles for cultural and environmental<br />

survival, students will bring new knowl-<br />
