ENGL 317. Creative Writing<br />

Workshop<br />

3 credits<br />

A workshop focusing on the creative forms of<br />

poetry and fiction. <strong>St</strong>udent work forms the center<br />

of the course, supported by outside reading and<br />

writing exercises. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

ENGL 318. Tutorial Writing<br />

1 credit<br />

Theory and practice of tutoring writing. Course<br />

has specific applications for students tutoring<br />

writing in the <strong>St</strong>udent Success Center. Instructor<br />

approval required.<br />

ENGL 319. Environmental Writing 3 credits<br />

An examination of the student’s view of the<br />

nature of place through writing. Course also<br />

explores the character of literary natural history<br />

and surveys contemporary authors who write it.<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

ENGL 320. Writing Topics<br />

3 credits<br />

A workshop focusing on a specific writing genre<br />

or theme such as autobiography, journaling,<br />

biography, spiritual reflection, art and theater<br />

reviews, humor, or playwriting. Reading, writing<br />

exercises, and discussion create the context for<br />

student writing. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

+ENGL 341. American Poetry 3 credits<br />

An exploration of the American voice in poetry.<br />

Writers may include early poets such as Taylor and<br />

Bradstreet; 19th-century poets such as Whitman<br />

and Dickinson; early- and mid-20th-century poets<br />

such as Pound, Williams and Hughes; and contemporary<br />

poets such as Rich, Ginsberg and Jordan.<br />

+ENGL 343. American Realism<br />

and Naturalism<br />

3 credits<br />

An exploration of realism and naturalism in context<br />

of social changes and scientific beliefs in late<br />

19th- and early 20th-century America. Writers<br />

may include Twain, Howells, James, Chopin,<br />

Wharton, Gilman, DuBois, Washington, Norris,<br />

Crane and Dreiser. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

+ENGL 344. Modernism<br />

3 credits<br />

An intercultural and multinational examination<br />

of “modern” forms, concepts, and sensibilities<br />

during the early 20th century. Writers may<br />

include Joyce, Woolf, Hemingway, Faulkner,<br />

Mann, Toomer, Yeats, Eliot, Pound, <strong>St</strong>evens and<br />

O’Neill. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

+ENGL 345. Twentieth-Century Fiction 3 credits<br />

A critical examination of the distinguishing characteristics<br />

of modern fiction from Britain, Europe<br />

and the Americas, possibly considering formal<br />

properties of the novels as well as modern cultural<br />

and social issues. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

+ENGL 346. Contemporary Fiction<br />

A study of fiction in the last 25 years.<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

3 credits<br />

ENGL 350. Independent <strong>St</strong>udy 1–3 credits<br />

Advanced critical study or research in an area<br />

agreed upon by student and instructor. Topics<br />

are not taught in regularly offered courses. May<br />

be scheduled for a maximum of three credits.<br />

+ENGL 360. Advanced Topics 3 credits<br />

An advanced study of specific literary forms,<br />

themes, movements or authors. Topics will be<br />

announced each semester the course is offered.<br />

ENGL 400. Writing Internship 1–6 credits<br />

Supervised experience working as a writer in a<br />

professional environment. Competitively selected<br />

candidates will keep a journal, write a summative<br />

reflective paper and submit a portfolio of written<br />

work.<br />

WI-ENGL 401. Senior Seminar 3 credits<br />

A capstone to the major in English, including a<br />

research paper which uses critical and scholarly<br />

methods to explore a student-selected topic.<br />
