choice and organization of material, audience<br />

analysis, oral style of delivery. Extemporaneous<br />

Communication<br />

3 credits<br />

Introduction to the basic skills of oral communication.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udy of basic communication theory in<br />

interpersonal communication, small group communication<br />

and public speaking and demonstrate<br />

proficiency in these areas for successful communication<br />

in their personal and professional lives.<br />

Communication<br />

Introduction to intrapersonal and interpersonal<br />

communication processes, perception, and decision-making.<br />

Verbal and nonverbal codes, transactional<br />

styles, and techniques of enhancing interpersonal<br />

COMM 205. History of Mass<br />

Communication<br />

3 credits<br />

History of media, regulation of the industry,<br />

theories basic to electronic media in America.<br />

COMM 224. Radio and Television<br />

Production<br />

4 credits<br />

Theory and intense studio practice in all phases<br />

of radio and television production, culminating<br />

in presentation and critical evaluation of studentcreated<br />

programs.<br />

COMM 225. Introduction to Desktop<br />

Communication<br />

3 credits<br />

Survey of the components that make up desktop<br />

communications—the hardware and software,<br />

the technology and the terminology, the input<br />

devices and the output devices—as applied and<br />

used in the areas of broadcasting, public relations<br />

and advertising.<br />

COMM 230. Newswriting<br />

3 credits<br />

The practice of basic newswriting technique and<br />

an introduction in all areas of reporting on a<br />

daily newspaper. Prerequisite: ENGL 101.<br />

COMM 232. Mass Communication<br />

and Society<br />

3 credits<br />

<strong>St</strong>udy of ethics, rights, responsibilities and the<br />

place of mass media in social change and social<br />

planning.<br />

COMM 233. Topics in Communication 3 credits<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies various topics associated with the field of<br />

communication. Specific topics are chosen by the<br />

faculty pursuant to faculty and student interest.<br />

Course may be repeated when topic changes.<br />

COMM 240. Principles of Public<br />

Relations<br />

3 credits<br />

The history of public relations as developed in<br />

various organizations. <strong>St</strong>udies how public relations<br />

fits into an organization’s marketing program;<br />

the practice, procedures and duties of public<br />

relations personnel in various types of organizations;<br />

communication strategies and tactics<br />

used to develop a communication plan consistent<br />

with the organizational goals.<br />

COMM 251. Writing for Public<br />

Relations<br />

3 credits<br />

Introductory course in the process of writing for<br />

the field of public relations. Focuses on the identification<br />

of target audiences, their needs and<br />

how to reach the audiences through writing.<br />

Prerequisites: COMM 230, 240.<br />

WI-COMM 306. Group<br />

Decision-Making<br />

3 credits<br />

Introduction to the process of decision-making in<br />

a small group setting. Emphasis on how informed<br />

decisions are reached based on a reflective think-<br />
