Course Description<br />

+LAT 101, 102. Introduction to Latin 3 credits<br />

Designed to develop accuracy in translation.<br />

Emphasis on grammatical structure, syntax and<br />

graded reading of prose selections.<br />

Spanish<br />

Requirements for a Teaching or Non-Teaching<br />

Major: 18 semester credits of Spanish at the 300-<br />

level, including at least six semester credits of<br />

Spanish or Latin American literature. Spanish<br />

majors who participate in a study abroad program<br />

or transfer to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Ambrose</strong> need to take at<br />

least six Spanish credits on campus.<br />

Requirements for a Spanish Major for students<br />

who do not study abroad for a full academic<br />

year: 18 semester credits of Spanish at the 300-<br />

level including nine semester credits of Spanish or<br />

Latin American literature of which at least six<br />

semester credits are taught in Spanish, and three<br />

semester credits in either Spanish Civilization or<br />

Latin American Civilization and HIST 378.<br />

Teaching majors need to complete a program of<br />

study approved by the Language and Education<br />

Department chairs. Recommended: At least one<br />

year of a second language.<br />

If study abroad is in a Latin American country<br />

(rather than Spain), a Latin American civilization<br />

course, or a course in the history and/or culture<br />

of the country in which the student studies, may<br />

be taken in lieu of Spanish civilization.<br />

Minor: 12 semester credits of Spanish courses at<br />

the 300-level.<br />

Acquaints the student with Spanish through<br />

experience in the five language skills of understanding,<br />

speaking, reading, writing and culture.<br />

+SPAN 201, 202. Second Year Spanish 3 credits<br />

Review of fundamentals. Wider mastery of<br />

Spanish idiomatic usage, oral and aural skills.<br />

Reading of Spanish texts. Prerequisites:<br />

SPAN 101, 102; two years of high school<br />

Spanish or equivalent.<br />

+SPAN 301. Spanish Composition and<br />

Conversation I<br />

3 credits<br />

Development of written and oral skills through<br />

writing compositions and discussing reading<br />

materials in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or<br />

equivalent.<br />

Conversation II<br />

3 credits<br />

Continuation of SPAN 301 with emphasis on<br />

written and conversational skills and a general<br />

introduction to Spanish and Latin American civilization.<br />
