Undergraduate Programs<br />

on the exams. CLEP exams cannot be taken after<br />

students have received credit in a college language<br />

course. Therefore, students are encouraged<br />

to take CLEP exams prior to enrolling in college<br />

in order to receive credit, and in order to be<br />

placed at the appropriate level of language study.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents planning to teach must show credit<br />

earned in lower level courses either through<br />

CLEP credit, by taking the courses in high school<br />

or college, or by demonstrating proficiency.<br />

Many courses are offered on a cycled basis.<br />

Please consult with the department chair in order<br />

to avoid delays in beginning a language sequence.<br />

International <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

Requirements for an International <strong>St</strong>udies Minor<br />

Core courses: 15 credit hours including: a foreign<br />

language through level 302; HIST 102 or 338; IS<br />

310; PSCI 309 or 313 or 316. Electives: Choose<br />

two of the following: PSCI 309, 313, 316; BUS<br />

321, 322; ECON 331; HIST 102, 220, 225, 230,<br />

235, 316, 337, 338; ART 351, 352, 353; PHIL<br />

Course Descriptions<br />

Note: The following courses require no knowledge<br />

of a foreign language.<br />

+IS 101. Cultures of the World 3 credits<br />

Introduction to culture in general and specifically<br />

to the study of the cultures of countries where<br />

French, German, Russian and Spanish are spoken.<br />

Content varies.<br />

+IS 103. International Experience 4 credits<br />

Foreign experience. Introduction to culture in<br />

general and specifically to the study of the cultures<br />

of the country or countries visited as they<br />

contrast with U.S. culture.<br />

+IS 201. Selected Works of<br />

French Literature in Translation 3 credits<br />

<strong>St</strong>udy of selected French novelists including<br />

familiar authors such as Balzac, Hugo, Zola and<br />

Flaubert and others. Fulfills both language and<br />

literature requirement.<br />

+IS 204. Selected Works of Hispanic<br />

Literature in Translation<br />

3 credits<br />

Selected works in translation from Spain and<br />

Latin America, as well as from the U.S., some<br />

originally written in English. Prerequisite:<br />

Sophomore standing or instructor permission.<br />

+IS 210. Selected Topics in Culture and<br />

Civilization<br />

3 credits<br />

Acquaints students with major developments in<br />

the history, culture and civilization of specific<br />

countries or regions of the world. Meets language<br />

requirement but not literature requirement for<br />

general education.<br />

IS 310. Capstone Experience<br />

3 credits<br />

Team-taught, interdisciplinary course bringing<br />

together all previous course work done in pursuit<br />

of an international studies minor.<br />

French<br />

Requirements for a Teaching or Non-Teaching<br />

Major: 18 semester credits of French at the 300-<br />

level, including at least six credits of French literature,<br />

fulfilled only by studying abroad. Teaching<br />

majors need to complete a program of study<br />

approved by both the Language and Education<br />

Department chairs.<br />

Requirements for a Teaching or Non-Teaching<br />

Minor: 12 semester credits of French in courses<br />

at the 300-level. <strong>St</strong>udents who minor in French<br />

must take at least six hours on campus.<br />

+FREN 101, 102. First Year French 4 credits<br />

Acquaints the student with French through experiences<br />

in the five language skills of understanding,<br />

speaking, reading, writing and culture.<br />
