CRJU 330. Criminal Justice <strong>St</strong>atistics<br />

and Methods<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is structured to introduce undergraduate<br />

and graduate criminal justice majors to the<br />

methodology and statistics used to explore and<br />

explain phenomenon relating to the study of<br />

crime and criminal justice. The scientific method,<br />

hypothesis testing, descriptive and inferential statistics<br />

sampling, experimental and quasi-experimental,<br />

and survey designs are explored.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 102, 231, 400.<br />

CRJU 340. Public and Private Security 3 credits<br />

The purpose of this course is to understand the<br />

relationship between public and private security<br />

through the examination of historical developments,<br />

organizational structures, trends, goals,<br />

and ramifications of social and economic forces<br />

as they relate to the security industry.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 102.<br />

CRJU 342. Criminal Evidence and<br />

Investigation<br />

3 credits<br />

This course examines the process of investigating<br />

crimes beginning with the first officer on the<br />

scene and ending with prosecution. Emphasis is<br />

placed on search and seizure, suspects’ rights to<br />

counsel, interviewing practices, and expert witnesses.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 102.<br />

CRJU 400. Criminological Theory 3 credits<br />

This course examines theories of crime causation,.<br />

Topics covered include: prominent theories<br />

in the study of crime, the use of official and unofficial<br />

statistics in assessing crime in US society,<br />

the inter-play of theory and social policy/program<br />

implementation. Prerequisites: CRJU 101; junior<br />

or senior status.<br />

CRJU 401. Individual Research 3 credits<br />

Applied research in a related area of interest to<br />

the student. Requires an empirical component in<br />

the research design. Arranged in consultation<br />

with the instructor. Enrollment subject to instructor<br />

approval.<br />

CRJU 402. Directed Readings 1–3 credits<br />

Specialized readings and reviews on an independent<br />

basis. May be repeated for a maximum of<br />

three credits if topics differ. Requires departmental<br />

approval.<br />

CRJU 403. Workshop<br />

1–3 credits<br />

Topics and activities are designed to offer practical<br />

skill development opportunities useful to<br />

criminal justice practitioners. May be repeated<br />

for a maximum of three credits if topics differ.<br />

Requires departmental approval.<br />

WI-CRJU 407. Seminar in<br />

Criminal Justice<br />

3 credits<br />

A capstone seminar focusing on analysis and<br />

evaluation of current practice, with emphasis on<br />

ethical and operational issues confronting the<br />

criminal justice practitioner. Prerequisite: 12<br />

criminal justice credits including CRJU 316, or<br />

instructor consent.<br />

CRJU 411. The Constitution and<br />

Criminal Justice<br />

3 credits<br />

This course will examine the organization of the<br />

American judicial system, the historical origins of<br />

the Constitution and the Bill of rights. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

will also explore the rights of the accused that<br />

are protected by the constitution. Prerequisite:<br />

Senior standing or instructor’s permission.<br />

CRJU 410. Crime Policy Analysis 3 credits<br />

This course examines the development and implementation<br />

of crime policy from a political, institutional,<br />

and administrative perspective.<br />

Application of political theories and policy analysis<br />

research techniques to better understanding<br />

and improving crime policy. Prerequisite: CRJU<br />

101 or instructor’s permission.<br />

CRJU 421. Practicum<br />

3–6 credits<br />

Field observation and research under professional<br />

supervision in a criminal justice or human services<br />

related agency. Arranged by the department<br />

with chair approval. Pass/No Pass course.<br />
