Introduction to culture and civilization of Latin<br />

America including political, literary, economic,<br />

social and artistic life in Latin America.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or equivalent.<br />

SPAN 310. Special Topics<br />

3–9 credits<br />

Literary genre or period, either of Peninsular or<br />

of Latin American literature, or both, which is<br />

dealt with in more detail than is possible in a survey<br />

of literature course. Work may also be done<br />

LS 090. Pre-College Reading<br />

and <strong>St</strong>udy Skills<br />

3 credits*<br />

Reading and study skills class required of students<br />

who place below a certain level on the<br />

Nelson-Denny Test. It emphasizes listening skills,<br />

vocabulary skills, textbook reading skills, effective<br />

memory techniques, and how to be a better<br />

overall reader. <strong>St</strong>udents in this course will take<br />

LS 100 in the spring semester at the recommendation<br />

of the instructor. A competency level of C<br />

is required before a student may enroll in a higher<br />

level course.<br />

*Institutional credit only. This will satisfy financial<br />

and eligibility requirements.<br />

Skills<br />

3 credits<br />

Develops effective college-level reading skills<br />

including vocabulary-enrichment, increased comprehension,<br />

concentration, and recall. Introduces<br />

and facilitates those study skills which characterize<br />

successful academic behavior, including listening,<br />

note-taking, test-taking, studying, and time<br />

management skills. Offers analytical reasoning<br />

and problem-solving as aspects of the learning<br />
