Substantive law affecting American business: contracts,<br />

the uniform commercial code, creditors<br />

and debtors, kinds of business organizations, litigation<br />

and other means to resolve disputes, consumer<br />

protection, torts, anti-trust law and legal<br />

aspects of management-labor relations. Public<br />

law and government regulations of business.<br />

Social responsibilities of business and ethics in<br />

business practice. Prerequisites: None.<br />

MBA 690. Leadership Through<br />

People Skills<br />

3 credits<br />

Intensive five-day seminar (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) with<br />

objective of creating better business managerial<br />

results through the study of behaviors, leadership<br />

styles, communication processes, and motivation.<br />

Course completion graded on Pass/Fail basis.<br />

Prerequisites: Two to three hours of pre-work<br />

assignments which MUST be completed prior to<br />

the five-day seminar. Course may be taken any<br />

time during the program. Please consult with the<br />

MBA office to reserve your place in LTPS.<br />

Advance notice of intent is recommended. Prework<br />

is mailed from the MBA office prior to<br />

each seminar.<br />

Management Decision-Making Courses<br />

MBA 670. Operations Management 3 credits<br />

Quantitative techniques and the systems<br />

approach applied to understanding and improving<br />

the operations of both manufacturing and<br />

service organizations. Techniques from quality,<br />

learning, forecasting, process design, scheduling,<br />

waiting lines, inventory and MRP are utilized.<br />

Underlying principles such as tradeoff analysis,<br />

Pareto, process control, and optimization of<br />

resource usage are emphasized throughout. The<br />

objective is for the student to understand how<br />

organizations actually achieve results and how to<br />

identify opportunities to improve their operation.<br />

Prerequisites: MBA 505, MBA 621, MBA 626 or<br />

consent of instructor.<br />

MBA 675. Financial Management 3 credits<br />

Analysis of business financial management:<br />

sources and uses of funds, raising funds from<br />

internal versus external sources, long-term versus<br />

short-term funding decisions, the cost of capital,<br />

alternate uses of capital, using leverage, security<br />

in borrowing/lending, dividends versus retained<br />

earnings, and use of the financial market.<br />

Prerequisites: MBA 505, MBA 507, MBA 526.<br />

MBA 680. Marketing Management 3 credits<br />

Marketing is the managerial process by which<br />

firms create value for their customers through the<br />

exchange of products and services. The emphasis<br />

of this course is on how the marketing manager<br />

can achieve desired outcomes with the target<br />

market. Broad topics include (1) analyzing marketing<br />

opportunities, (2) researching and organizing,<br />

implementing and controlling the marketing<br />

effort. <strong>St</strong>udents will prepare and present a marketing<br />

plan. Prerequisites: None.<br />

MBA 685. Human Resource<br />

Management<br />

3 credits<br />

This course focuses on the strategic use of human<br />

resources. Major topics covered may include<br />

equal employment opportunity laws, job analysis,<br />

human resource planning, recruitment and selection,<br />

performance appraisal, training and development,<br />

compensation and benefits, and<br />

labor/management relations. Prerequisites: None.<br />

Capstone Seminar<br />

MBA 800. Policy Formation and<br />

Implementation<br />

3 credits<br />

Formulating and implementing business policy.<br />

Draws upon all analytical tools and business<br />

administration knowledge developed in all previous<br />

graduate-level courses. Prerequisites:<br />

Normally scheduled in the last semester of the<br />

MBA program.*<br />
