extension practices can alleviate them. This approach has changed the very dynamics<br />

of extension and is now being scaled up from South Asia to Africa to help reform<br />

extension systems there.<br />

An approach grounded in metrics and accountability: The development of the<br />

strategy was also rooted in the importance of metrics across the various dimensions<br />

of the work (and across the entire agricultural value chain) to keep track of progress<br />

around our ambitious goals, in order to learn from mistakes and scale up successes. 3<br />

A comprehensive regional food systems approach: The strategy was also<br />

developed to ground the work in a comprehensive food systems approach that<br />

looks at both the demand and supply side of the agricultural value chain. While the<br />

focus of the efforts is largely on the supply side, which tends to have larger market<br />

failures, the program also monitors developments on the demand side: to ensure<br />

that supply-side interventions respond to demand; or create sustainable demand;<br />

or to identify what sort of partnerships can be forged to ensure this alignment.<br />
