John McArthur<br />

Visiting Fellow, Global Economy and Development Program and Africa Growth<br />

Initiative, The Brookings Institution<br />

John McArthur is simultaneously a senior fellow with the UN Foundation and a<br />

senior fellow with the Fung Global Institute. An international development economist,<br />

he was previously the Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Promise, the leading<br />

international non-governmental organization solely committed to supporting the<br />

achievement of the Millennium Development Goals to halve extreme poverty by<br />

2015. He was also a faculty member at Columbia University’s School of International<br />

and Public Affairs and a research scholar at the University’s Earth Institute, where<br />

he also served as Policy Director. From 2002-06 he served as a manager and then<br />

Deputy Director of the United Nations Millennium Project, and was lead editor of<br />

that Project’s final report, Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieve<br />

the Millennium Development Goals. He earned a BA at the University of British<br />

Columbia, a Master’s in Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of<br />

Government, and an MPhil and DPhil in Economics at Oxford University, which he<br />

attended as a Rhodes Scholar.<br />

Mthuli Ncube<br />

Chief Economist and Vice President, African Development Bank<br />

Mthuli Ncube oversees the African Development Bank’s Economics Complex,<br />

which focuses on knowledge management within the Bank and with its partners,<br />

and guides the general economic strategic direction of the Bank. In this regard,<br />

he looks after the Development Research Division, Statistics Division, and African<br />

Development Institute, all of whose directors report to him. Before joining the Bank,<br />

he was Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management at the University<br />

of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, South Africa, having previously served<br />

as Dean and Professor of Finance at Wits Business School. He has extensive<br />

experience as an investment banker, and was founding Chairman of Barbican and<br />
