Semi-Arid Tropics, where he focused on natural resource management strategies<br />

for smallholder agriculture. He has published widely in refereed journals and books.<br />

His research interests are in public policy research focusing on agricultural transformation,<br />

food security, regional trade, economic geography, poverty alleviation,<br />

and institutional development at macro and sectoral levels. He holds a Bachelor’s<br />

degree in Agriculture and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the<br />

University of Nairobi, and a PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the<br />

University of New England (Australia).<br />

John Page<br />

Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution<br />

John Page is a senior fellow in The Brookings Institution’s Global Economy and<br />

Development Program, and a director of the International Growth Center of the<br />

London School of Economics and Oxford University. From 1980 to 2008, he was<br />

at the World Bank where his senior positions included: Director, Poverty Reduction;<br />

Director, Economic Policy; Chief Economist and Director, Economic and Social<br />

Development, Middle East and North Africa Region; and Chief Economist, Africa<br />

Region. Before his appointment at the World Bank, he was a member of the faculty<br />

at Stanford and Princeton Universities. He is a research associate at the Center<br />

for the Study of African Economies at Oxford University and has been a consultant<br />

to the African Development Bank, the Global Development Network, and the<br />

Japan International Cooperation Agency, among other agencies. His several books<br />

include Africa at a Turning Point? Growth, Aid and External Shocks (2008), and<br />

Breaking in and Moving Up: Industrial Challenges for the Bottom Billion and the<br />

Middle Income Countries (2009). He is the author of more than 80 published articles<br />

on the economics of developing countries. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in<br />

Economics from Stanford University and his PhD from Oxford University, where he<br />

was a Rhodes Scholar.<br />

Vijaya Ramachandran<br />

Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development (CGD)<br />

Vijaya Ramachandran works on private sector development, food security, humanitarian<br />

assistance, and development interventions in fragile states. Before joining<br />

CGD, Dr. Ramachandran served on the faculty at Georgetown University and also<br />
