Seine legendären Bruckner-Konzerte trugen wesentlich
zum internationalen Ruf des Orchesters bei.
Nach seinem Tod sorgte James Levine als Chefdirigent
ab 1999 für den weiteren Ausbau des Repertoires in
Richtung zeitgenössische Musik. In der Nachfolge von
Christian Thielemann hat ab der Saison 2012/2013 Lorin
Maazel das Amt des Chefdirigenten übernommen.
Bereichert wird die Vielfalt der Musikmetropole durch
das Angebot der renommierten staatlichen Opernbühne
des Nationaltheaters, das den Spagat zwischen
klassischem Repertoire und neuer Musik meistert.
Zudem setzt es mit den Ballettwochen und den
Opernfestspielen attraktive Highlights im Münchner
Kulturjahr. Das Theater am Gärtnerplatz, das Prinzregententheater,
die Veranstaltungen privater und öffentlicher
Anbieter im städtischen Kulturzentrum Gasteig,
der Muffathalle, von internationalen Stars in der
Olympiahalle, in Münchens kleinstem Opernhaus in
der „Pasinger Fabrik“ und viele andere mehr runden
das Angebot auf hohem Niveau ab.
Im Sommer erobern Münchens musikalische Highlights
auch den öffentlichen Raum, begeistern Open-
Air-Events wie die „Klassik am Odeonsplatz“, die auch
Solisten von Weltrang präsentiert oder die „umsonst
und draußen“ zum Publikumsrenner und Fest gewordene
„Oper für alle“ in den Fünf Höfen, am Max-
Josephs- und Marstallplatz. Kultur und Lebenslust finden
da in München aufs Beste zusammen.
Das internationale Festival für zeitgenössisches Musiktheater
„Münchener Biennale“ existiert mittlerweile
seit mehr als 20 Jahren und ist weltweit einzigartig.
Mit bisher über 80 Uraufführungen von Komponisten
und Komponistinnen aus aller Welt ist das Festival
immer am Puls der Zeit und hat ein Stück Musikgeschichte
geschrieben. Die meisten dieser Werke wurden
mit Festivals und Opernhäusern im In- und Ausland
koproduziert, und fast alle haben anschließend
ihren Weg in die Spielpläne der großen Musiktheater
gefunden. Die Münchener Biennale ist Forum für die
programmatische Entwicklung des zeitgenössischen
Musiktheaters und hat inzwischen eine Generation
von Komponisten und Künstlern geprägt.
Mit ihren Auslandsreisen und Gastspielen bringen die
drei großen Orchester nicht nur musikalische Akzent-
Setzungen in alle Welt, sondern sie sind auch eine
intensive Werbung für die Landeshauptstadt und leisten
damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Internationalität

the Olympic Hall, in Munich’s smallest opera house
Pasinger Fabrik and numerous others round off the
top-quality offering.
In summer, Munich’s musical highlights also conquer
the public arena with open-air events like the “Klassik
am Odeonsplatz”, which also presents world-class soloists,
the “umsonst and draußen” (free and outdoor),
the highly popular “Opera for Everyone” concerts in
the Fünf Höfe courtyards and others at Max-Josephs
Square and Marstall Square. Culture and joie de vivre
come together at these events.

more than 20 years and is one of its kind in the world.

orchestras and musical theatres, it also boasts the
Munich Chamber Orchestra, for example, which is at
