* 1.5.1.1 First <strong>of</strong> all, it is significant to notice that the spread<br />

<strong>of</strong> the cup-<strong>and</strong>-ring motif is almost completely confined to the<br />

southern part <strong>of</strong> Norway <strong>and</strong> Sweden. Only one major cup-<strong>and</strong>-ring site<br />

(S<strong>and</strong>l<strong>and</strong> 1997: 27) occurs further north, at Okkenhaug near<br />

Trondheim (see map Fig. 183). <strong>The</strong>refore I restricted my surveys to<br />

the area south <strong>of</strong> the Sognefjord (Norway) <strong>and</strong> the town <strong>of</strong> Uppsala<br />

(Sweden) (Fig. 91).<br />

In the study area there are 247 cup-<strong>and</strong>-ring motifs (see however<br />

Appendix 6), that are unevenly distributed across the two countries.<br />
