towards the Taxes valley. In this respect the group may be compared with the rock art cluster at Millstone Burn in northern England. Travelling further north one reaches the valley of Taxes and in my opinion one continued towards the NE to reach the prominent outcrop at As Laxiñas with its extensive inland views, rather than going steeply uphill towards the Laxe do Carrizo. Instead, a line of rock art sites further north leads uphill along the banks of a stream and probably connects with the high site at Chans de Tras. This line of rock art sites may have served as a territorial boundary and resembles similar lines of rock art sites, for instance at Paredes near Campo Lameiro (Fig. 49; inset) and A Puexa near Bayona (Fig. 38), the latter forming a distinct linear group, coinciding with an ancient, partially paved, track. illus illus FIGURE 49: CAMPO LAMEIRO. illus illus illus illus M. van HOEK: 70 GEOGRAPHY
One petroglyph outcrop stone is even still embedded in this ancient track. Most characteristic of the sites in the Taxes and Valdexería valleys is their high altitude and their concentration around the 300 m contour. It is also remarkable that there is no rock art on the west facing slopes of the Valdexería valley and further north and east from the Muros rock art concentration. Having discussed an example of a coastal distribution of Galician rock art sites, the Muros peninsula, I now will review a typical inland group of rock art sites, at Gargamala. See next Chapter.
