ON THE NATURAL DESIRE FOR KNOWLEDGE 131copyists, sure and prompt publications, the continuous guidance andhelp <strong>of</strong> elders and colleagues, who will keep us on the right road and inexcellent company with no risk <strong>of</strong> the hindrances recounted above; theywill illuminate the best doctrine and with continuous, friendly, and loyalconference 78 they will correct, refine, and enrich our ideas and awakennew ones, always helping with both counsel and advice, not least byalways signifying 79 to us what may occur in any place in literary mattersor new observations or instruments or compositions or other things asthough they were universally present; 80 and such good guides and aidswill ensure that the best means, such as repertories, methods, and synopses,which can so greatly facilitate the enterprise, will not be left aside.Of which enterprise it is not even to be doubted that it could prove tobe <strong>di</strong>fficult for the powers <strong>of</strong> selected, well united, and fervent subjects, whoare provided with the last three guides noted by Ficino 81 and primarily withfirm and constant will, with which they themselves undertake the enterprise,and that, with the continual fruits and pleasures 82 and the exhortationfrom their superiors, will be ever more resolved; the heavenly and <strong>natural</strong>others, 83 are either efficaciously present in persons who decide to dothis, or at least sufficiently; 84 and such is the value <strong>of</strong> the continuouswarmth and foment <strong>of</strong> companions (which can be quite invigorating) and<strong>of</strong> good means and rules (which can compensate for a lack <strong>of</strong> genius ortenacious memory, in ad<strong>di</strong>tion to me<strong>di</strong>cinal reme<strong>di</strong>es) that even for thosewho, by reason <strong>of</strong> such defects or <strong>natural</strong> laziness, should be less valorousthough not excluded from attaining eminence in knowledge <strong>of</strong> at least anotable level <strong>of</strong> doctrine, it is certain that their renunciation <strong>of</strong> all otherbusiness and their de<strong>di</strong>cation <strong>of</strong> all their time and all assiduity to this shallsuffice to level every <strong>di</strong>fficulty and ease all greater labor; the harshness <strong>of</strong>which, once past the initial stage, [will be], partly by inurement but muchmore by the sweetness <strong>of</strong> the fruits that begin to be and more and more areharvested, altogether removed.
