LYNCEAN RESOLUTION 1That precept, sanctioned by the ancient fathers – that each shouldknow himself by meditating deeply on the many errors and the misery ofhuman things – has placed before our eyes the true Wisdom, which is notonly able to free us from such evils but which can also bestow upon us asort of beatitude. Knowledge in fact is a most gentle work of the humanmind and a most useful nutriment of genius. Therefore, in order that wemay more easily be able to attain it, with watchful discipline, with precisemethods, united in a labor of association, and so that we may lead ahappy life in the pursuit of study, we have segregated ourselves from thecontagion of the common herd, liberating ourselves from the plague oflaziness. We have joined together in the Lyncean Assembly of scholars, instituted and structured with excellent laws by Prince Federico Cesi, second Marquis of Monticelli, and we have gathered ourselves together init, as in the camp of a philosophical militia. We have committed ourselves, furthermore, to conserving among ourselvesbenevolence, reciprocal custom, and the bond of a sincere loyalty;to bring together all of our efforts and to support each other in all things:and not only to profess the title of Lyncean among ourselves in all of ourscholarly activities, especially our publications, but also to render it evermore illustrious, nobly and learnedly as is convenient to undertakings ofpublic utility; and to enlarge upon Lyncean things, obtaining results inconformity with our efforts. And as all of this we wholeheartedly want to achieve, inflamed by thefervor of scholarship and with the scruple of those who wish to master thesciences, so upon these tablets, for everlasting memory, we have impressedour name which we want to be prosperous, happy, and fortunate, so that allshould know that we intend forever to be faithful to what is written here.1 Translated from Latin: cf. the original in A.
