CONDENSED LYNCEAN CONSTITUTIONS 93he lives, unless it should happen to all the Lynceans to decided otherwise, butaccor<strong>di</strong>ng to the same rule, on another who shall take his place, and so on.They must not recognize anyone as a Lyncean except him who, welcomedby the Prince, as has been said, 2 shall obtain trust by attestation <strong>of</strong>the Prince himself.They must send frequent greetings to the Prince with letters and keephim informed <strong>of</strong> their cases and stu<strong>di</strong>es, and also to all <strong>of</strong> their brotherLynceans at least once a year, around the 17th <strong>of</strong> August.They must never reprove or reproach any Lyncean by name – in personor in books –, but instead praise him as the opportunity presents itself.They must sustain the entire Lyncean program with all commitment,application, and favor, by concourse <strong>of</strong> advice, and <strong>of</strong> affection, and byother means.They must consult the Prince with regard to the publication <strong>of</strong> a volumeand attend his response before publishing, in order that he mayassist with his friendly advice or in any other way; upon publication theymust donate one copy to each Lyncean and three to the Lyncean library.If they are not able to print the volumes at their own expense theyshould know that, if they so wish and request, upon approval by the librarian,the volumes can be printed at the expense <strong>of</strong> the Prince or <strong>of</strong> theCollege; likewise, if one has not been able to print them because struck bymortal illness, he shall leave them to the Lynceans so they can faithfullyprint them; if they should not wish to print them because incomplete, thevolumes shall be faithfully conserved in the Lyncean archive.They must never place their pen like a sickle in another’s crops in controversies<strong>of</strong> politics or theology; if on the order <strong>of</strong> the Princes 3 or forsome other necessary reason someone must nevertheless <strong>di</strong>scuss or writein such a way, he shall first ask consent <strong>of</strong> the Lyncean Prince and shallnot reveal in such book or <strong>di</strong>spute that he is a Lyncean. 42 In the Lynceographum for example, p. 5 ff. <strong>of</strong> the cited e<strong>di</strong>tion.3 Here, obviously, the reference is to political princes, and not the Lyncean princes.4 On this point see A. 94RISTRETTO DELLE COSTITUZIONI LINCEESe nella regione in cui si trovano accade qualcosa <strong>di</strong> nuovo riguardoa questioni letterarie o ai Lincei vicini, avvertano subito il Principe; se unLinceo chiede una relazione su qualche fatto che accade nella medesimaregione, con serenità e prontezza espongano i casi propizi o avversi e lirendano noti al Principe, affinché egli possa dar loro sostegno con consiglie aiuti secondo le sue possibilità.In punto <strong>di</strong> morte, lascino l’anello a un Linceo <strong>di</strong> loro scelta, affinchévenga conservato e custo<strong>di</strong>to a loro perpetua memoria; e faccianolo stesso se accadrà loro <strong>di</strong> entrare in una regione ove non sia permessoportare l’anello.Tutti i benefattori dei Lincei siano ossequiati con onore, amore e lo<strong>di</strong>.Trascorrano in letizia il giorno 17 del mese <strong>di</strong> agosto: è in esso infattiche fu fondato il Collegio o Or<strong>di</strong>ne Linceo.Non si iscrivano mai ad un’altra Accademia o Collegio simile <strong>di</strong> stu<strong>di</strong>osie neppure ne assumano il nome. Tuttavia, sia loro lecito intervenireed esercitarsi in esse; è permesso che nei licei, <strong>di</strong> quando in quando, ci siraduni su iniziativa degli stessi Lincei per esercitazioni <strong>di</strong> stu<strong>di</strong>o, ammettendostu<strong>di</strong>osi esterni e amici probi, senza che mai i Lincei assumanoaltro nome che quello Linceo, né a nessuna con<strong>di</strong>zione lo comunichinoad altri o permettano ad altri <strong>di</strong> assumerlo; ma se in tali frequentazionicome <strong>di</strong> palestra incontreranno qualche uomo stu<strong>di</strong>oso e probo, adattoalla vita lincea, ne <strong>di</strong>ano comunicazione al Principe affinché, se gli parràopportuno, egli lo possa ascrivere nel novero dei Lincei.Sappiano che hanno la facoltà non soltanto <strong>di</strong> esprimere il proprioparere o voto nell’elezione del Principe alla sua morte, e <strong>di</strong> frequentaresempre i licei qualora siano costituiti e <strong>di</strong> stu<strong>di</strong>are nelle loro biblioteche,ma anche <strong>di</strong> scegliere il proprio successore che resti nell’Or<strong>di</strong>ne con leloro medesime funzioni,, e <strong>di</strong> essere accolti nei licei per riscuoterne ilvitto; hanno inoltre la facoltà <strong>di</strong> ricevere i beni necessari, che potrannotuttavia usare secondo la modalità esposta nel Linceografo; <strong>di</strong> esso iLincei attendano la pubblicazione in volume da parte del Principe, che neè il redattore: se ce ne sarà bisogno prima, ne chiedano notizia alCancelliere e al Consigliere.
