CONDENSED LYNCEAN CONSTITUTIONS 93he lives, unless it should happen to all the Lynceans to decided otherwise, butaccor<strong>di</strong>ng to the same rule, on another who shall take his place, and so on.They must not recognize anyone as a Lyncean except him who, welcomedby the Prince, as has been said, 2 shall obtain trust by attestation <strong>of</strong>the Prince himself.They must send frequent greetings to the Prince with letters and keephim informed <strong>of</strong> their cases and stu<strong>di</strong>es, and also to all <strong>of</strong> their brotherLynceans at least once a year, around the 17th <strong>of</strong> August.They must never reprove or reproach any Lyncean by name – in personor in books –, but instead praise him as the opportunity presents itself.They must sustain the entire Lyncean program with all commitment,application, and favor, by concourse <strong>of</strong> advice, and <strong>of</strong> affection, and byother means.They must consult the Prince with regard to the publication <strong>of</strong> a volumeand attend his response before publishing, in order that he mayassist with his friendly advice or in any other way; upon publication theymust donate one copy to each Lyncean and three to the Lyncean library.If they are not able to print the volumes at their own expense theyshould know that, if they so wish and request, upon approval by the librarian,the volumes can be printed at the expense <strong>of</strong> the Prince or <strong>of</strong> theCollege; likewise, if one has not been able to print them because struck bymortal illness, he shall leave them to the Lynceans so they can faithfullyprint them; if they should not wish to print them because incomplete, thevolumes shall be faithfully conserved in the Lyncean archive.They must never place their pen like a sickle in another’s crops in controversies<strong>of</strong> politics or theology; if on the order <strong>of</strong> the Princes 3 or forsome other necessary reason someone must nevertheless <strong>di</strong>scuss or writein such a way, he shall first ask consent <strong>of</strong> the Lyncean Prince and shallnot reveal in such book or <strong>di</strong>spute that he is a Lyncean. 42 In the Lynceographum for example, p. 5 ff. <strong>of</strong> the cited e<strong>di</strong>tion.3 Here, obviously, the reference is to political princes, and not the Lyncean princes.4 On this point see A.
