“And we definitely have been focusing a lot of water – this part produces a
lot of water for a very large irrigation canal that goes into Peru. And
actually all the rivers that come out of the Park go into Peru, but a lot of it is
for irrigation use and human consumption. So we wanna make sure that
that vegetation is protected because when the water is needed most – is in
the summer time now when it doesn’t rain – the forest is the only thing that
guarantees that there will be water – that sponge effect. It absorbs water
when it rains and then lets it out little by little in the summer time. It goes
sometimes three months with very little rain. So it’s very important for water
and we wanna work with keeping that water clean and plentiful.” (Joy
Horton 2001, San Pedro de Vilcabamba)
