Galápagos wurde die Höchstzahl von Touristen mit 15.000 pro Jahr
festgelegt, inzwischen besuchen aber ohne Rücksicht auf diese Limitierung
schon 60.000 Menschen pro Jahr den durch Darwin berühmt gewordenen
Archipel.
“There is always an optimal number beyond which given the
circumstances of this and that system. This number is not an absolute
number, it is related to the carrying capacity not only of the environment,
but of the local culture. And the means and results the culture can make
use of to absorb so to speak the bad effect of tourism. This carrying
capacity for example in the Galapagos was judged in the 1970ies at no
more than 15.000 people. In the 80ies it went up to 45.000; in the 90ies to
60.000 and so you can see.” (Orlando Falco 2001, Vilcabamba)
Obwohl diese Anzahl an Touristen zweifelsohne zuviel ist für die Galapagos
Inseln, so muss man doch zugeben, dass ohne Tourismus die seltenen Tiere
vielleicht gar nicht mehr existieren würden.
“And probably because of tourism the Galapagos still has animals.
Because if nobody worried about Galapagos and they managed it like they
manage most areas around here there would be nothing left. Everybody
would go there and colonise it and it the animals until they are gone. And
then cry: ‘Poor us!’”
Auf meine Frage, wie viele Touristen Vilcabamba aufnehmen kann ohne
dass die Umwelt (Touristen verbrauchen mehr Wasser und verursachen
mehr Müll als die lokale Bevölkerung) beeinträchtigt wird, bekam ich sehr
unterschiedliche Antworten.
Die Mehrzahl meiner Interviewpartner meinte, dass es im Moment noch nicht
zu viele Touristen gäbe.
“Now the tourists so far I mean, yes, it could double without harming
anything. There might be 50 incoming tourists per day in the village which
is not very much, a lot and not very much at the same time. The structure
to receive them is there.” (Marcel Belanger 2001, Vilcabamba)
“En cuanto al agua no sería mucho problema porque antes como
Vilcabamba tiene bastante agua. Porque estamos cerca del Parque
Nacional. Y en cuanto a la basura es para todo los países un problema.
Porque hay muchos plásticos especialmente, de la basura biodegradable
