Den Einwohnern von Vilcabamba soll der Stellenwert der Natur als
schützenswert und erhaltenswert begreifbar gemacht werden. Dies bringt
auch Orlando Falco zum Ausdruck:
“One of them is that we will conserve our waters, our streams, conserve
them with water and even better with clear water, that we will transform the
mentality of the people into being proud of their natural environment rather
than perceiving it as an obstacle they have to surmount - in order to
cultivate more of the same that has cost so much impoverishment of the
land and the peoples.” (Orlando Falco 2001, Vilcabamba)
Nicht nur die Umwelterziehung der lokalen Bevölkerung ist im Ökotourismus
wichtig, darüber hinaus soll auch den Touristen die Bedeutung der Natur
klargemacht werden. Der besuchte Ort soll den Touristen dazu anregen, sich
mehr Gedanken über die Natur zu machen.
“That the place inspires people to learn more about nature, a nature trail
carefully designed with information that is not too complicated but at the
same time emotionally binding, I find it more successful than extensive
complex scientific information to the abuses that they don’t really care for.”

Die Pläne von AVETUR sind durchaus lobenswert und stellen einen ersten
richtungsweisenden Schritt für die Zukunft dar, jedoch beklagten sich im
Rahmen meiner Interviews einige Mitglieder, dass AVETUR im Moment nicht
aktiv arbeitet und dass zwischen den einzelnen Mitgliedern noch nicht
genügend Zusammenhalt existiert.
“Que es una buena organización pero sin vida más o menos. Porque no
hay mucha actividad en cuanto a AVETUR, y también como todavía no es
muy sólida entonces no tiene mucha autoridad para controlar la actividad
aquí en Vilcabamba. Porque por eso lo que es también que hay personas
que hacen cosas que están fuera de lo que seria bueno para Vilcabamba,
para el turismo especialmente. Pero poner aquí control que se
impongan(?) normas si hace que lo se quiere.” (José Abad 2001,
