—¡Oiga, pitero ese Chabelo! Es
meramente un zinzonte348 el infeliz...
—Mesmamente: diayer paroy, le arranca
el alma al cristiano como nunca.
Callaban... y embarcaban su silencio
en el cayuco bogante349 de aquella
flauta apasionada, que los hundía en la
dulzura de un recordar sin recuer dos,
de un retornar sin retorno.
En poco tiempo, el negro Nayo
sobrepasó la fama de Chabelo.
Llegaban gentes de lejos para oírlo; y
su sencillez y humildad de siempre se
coloreaban de austeridad y poderío,
mientras su labio cárdeno352 soplaba el
agujero milagroso.
El propio Chabelo, que creyó conocer
todos los secretos del carrizo, se
quedaba pasmado, escuchando —con
un sí es, no es, de despecho—, el fluir
maravilloso de un sentimiento espeso
que se cogía con las manos.
“Listen up! That flutist is Chabelo! That
sonabitch is truly a zinzonte350 bird!
“No kiddin’! Overnight he touches the
soul every Christian like never before.”
They became quiet and launched their
silence in their cayuco351 boat rowed by
the passionate flute that emersed them
in the sweetness of a memory without
memories, of a return without returns.
In a short time, Nayo “the Blackman”
overshadowed the fame of Chabelo.
People from far away came to listen
to him. His usual humbleness and
humility were colored with austerity
and power, while his purple lips blew
into the miraculous hole.
Chabelo, himself, who thought he knew
all the secrets of the reed, became
astonished when listening jealously to
the marvelous flow of a thick sentiment
that could be caught with the hands.
