—La ña Grabiela taba quejándose, y se
jue callando, y se jue callando, y se jue
callando... hasta que se calló.
La Toya entró corriendo.
—¡Madrina, Madrina!...
Alguien seguía bañándose en el patio,
a guacaladas. Dulcemente volvió
a cerrarse la puerta de la esquina,
guardando los olores: olor a maicillo,
olor a petates, olor a manta y a cambray
pirujo, a jabón, a canela y anís... y a
esencia de azar.
“Señora Gabriela was moaning and
she became more and more quiet, and
then she faded away.”
Toya rushed inside.
“Godmother, godmother!”
Someone continued bathing in the
courtyard, splashing lots of water from
the trough. The corner door of the store
was once again gently shut, keeping
in the smells: smells of millet and new
straw mat; smells of coarse cotton
fabric and painted cloth, smells of soap,
cinnamon and aniseed, and the smell
of essence of orange blossom.
