Theme A: Connecting the Pearl River Delta RegionTHE INFLUENCES OF THE WALLS AND DOUBLE-GLAZING ON THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION INBUILDINGSMASOUD TAHERI SHAHRAEIN, LIHUA ZHAO, QINGLIN MENG,YONGCHAO ZHAI, XIAOSHAN YANGSchool of Architecture and civil Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, ChinaABSTRACT: The building envelopes highly influence the energy consumption in the buildings, located in the cold regions. In addition, the gradient between indoor and outdoor temperatures is themain factor for heat transfer in these buildings. There are many apartments with extended hollowblock walls and one-layer glazed windows in contact with air in Mashad, located in the cold regionsof Iran. Hence, there is intensive heat transfer between inside and outside of these apartments. In thispaper, the energy consumption in an assumed building in the Mashad with different constructionmethods for walls and windows is simulated by DeST-h. The results showed that insulated wall anddouble-glazing windows can decline the amount of consumed energy about 27.7 and 12.2%,respectively. According to appropriate construction cost of insulated wall, it is introduced as a properalternative. In addition, the influences of the position of a room in a floor on the energy consumptionand the amount of energy consumption in different floors are evaluated and compared. Theseevaluations show that the designer should have especial attention to the position of a room in thebuilding and its stories.Key words: hollow block; insulated wall; double-glazing; energy consumption; Mashad.1. INTRODUCTIONAs the population in the world increases, the consumption of energy increases andthe importance of energy consumption is revealed more and more. By the way, theoveruse of energy is an important factor in the environmental pollution and theshortage of energy resources, which can influence all of the countries.Iran as a developing country has huge resources of fuels and other energyresources such as wind and sun. Hence not only we should replace the fuel energywith the renewable energy resources, but also we should optimize the energyconsumption. Sustainable building is a well known method that can save energyand decrease its consumption and it is widely used in many of countries. Theresidential buildings are the major factor of energy consumption in the most of111
