Theme B: Creating a livable, healthy and environmentally viable citiesFigure 3: Airflow pattern at the shopping arcade under natural ventilation3.2.4 Use of Water-cooled Air-conditioning SystemThe design of Yau Tong Estate Phase 4 has also considered the use of moreenergy-efficient building services systems. Water-cooled air-conditioning systemis better than air-cooled air-conditioning system in terms of energy efficiency. Inaddition, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is currentlypromoting the use of water-cooled air-conditioning system in Hong Kong and YauTong District is one of the pilot areas. In this connection, water-cooled airconditioningsystem is proposed for the Development to enhance energyconservation.3.2.5 Solar ControlTwo key features of the atrium of the Development are the large curtain wall onthe northwestern facade and the skylight over the atrium. Although they allowdaylight infiltration to reduce energy consumption for artificial lighting, solarpenetration at the same time would increase the cooling load of the building. Tostrike a balance between solar gain, acceptable daylight level, and offering an openview toward the harbour, several measures are studied and suggested to optimiseenergy efficiency. They include the consideration of high performance glass andvertical fins for the glass wall as well as provision of motorized blind for theskylights.3.2.6 Green Roof204
