Theme B: Creating a livable, healthy and environmentally viable citiesenergy consumption and better comfort can be achieved using cavity and doubleenvelope. It was proved that the double skin façade effectively contributed toelectric lighting control using daylight [3].However, the control for the cavity area still needs to be set up according to thechange of configuration of double skin. This study aims at providing fundamentaldata will be effectively used for the development of control logics in future study.Field measurements were performed in a three-story building that has double skinon its eastern and western facade.2. RESEARCH METHOD2.1 Building for measurementThe building used for field measurements is located in Ansan, South Korea(Latitude: 37 o 17 ’ Longitude: 126 o 49 ’ ) It was completed in August 2007 and hasthree floors. The building before the completion of double skin envelope is shownin Figure 1.The first and second floors are used for experimental facilities of sustainablebuildings. The third floor is used for office space for research scientist andadministration staffs. The long axis of the building is along the axis from south tonorth direction. Double skin envelope is installed on the eastern and western sideof the building as it is indicated in Figure 1.The conceptual description of double skin used in this study is shown in Figure 2.Its dimension was 5.7m (width) by 0.5 m (depth) by 13.2 m (height). The internaland external skins were covered with glazing from the first floor to third floor. Thevertical side was also covered with glazing. The measured transmittance of glazingwas 0.83, but heat transfer coefficient was not determined in this study. In the internal skin wall exist at the top of each floor and it covered 1.2 m from thetop. The walls consisted of masonry and mortar.
