Theme B: Creating a livable, healthy and environmentally viable citiesPOE exercises have been conducted for six newly built or renovated projects overthe past two years. The information and data are usually collected throughquestionnaires, interviews, meetings, walk-through, audits, surveys, central controland monitoring system(CCMS) and other metering equipment, etc.Through systematic performance assessment and feedback from end-users,designers are given more insight to the practical use of the innovative andsustainable features, as well as a better understanding on the environmental, socialand economic feasibility on building projects. Mutual understanding between thedesigners and the end-users are much enhanced. The results of these exercises sofar have been very promising. More energy has been saved and the dailyoperations are much smoother. Some improvement proposals have also beenidentified for future projects. It is hoped that, based on experience gained, aprotocol of such assessment methodology and practice can be established orfurther improved for the industry.2. EVAULATION OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN2.1 Sustainable DesignArchSD encourages project teams and consultants to explore every opportunity toadopt sustainable design features by setting a list of sustainable design principles,such as sustainable planning, preservation of existing heritage and habitats, energyconservation, waste management, use of materials, operation and maintenance, etc.Every year, the Department receives recognition for contribution andaccomplishment in sustainable design and construction[2].2.1.1 Targets on energy efficiencyEfficient energy use is the key for developing a sustainable future.
