<strong>The</strong>me C: Education and Market Transformationlivelihoods, participate in a democratic society, and live in a sustainable manner.As a result, cross-curricular approach will undoubtedly become the mainstreamapproach for ESD in schools.In response to the call for integration of learning and development of corecompetencies and life-long learning among young people for the 21st century, therationale of ESD coincidentally goes in line with the trend of curriculum reform inHong Kong. <strong>The</strong> reforms are not just about changing the academic structure forsecondary education, but also for primary and pre-schools education; they areabout adopting a “whole new way of teaching and learning”, which are the goldenopportunity to integrate ESD into the curriculum. Both the rationale of ESD andnew curriculum structure aim to liberate the young mind, to develop broadknowledge base for students, to help them to understand the importance ofcontemporary issues on different levels from multi-perspectives, and ultimately tohelp them to become critical, reflective and independent thinkers and informed andresponsible citizens.3. ENHANCING TEACHING PR<strong>OF</strong>ESSION - NECESSITY FORFURTHER COLLABORATION WITH PR<strong>OF</strong>ESSIONALSFROM DIFFERENT DISCIPLINESReorienting education to address sustainability should not only bind within theformal education system, but also include non-formal education sectors, forexample professionals, NGOs, community organizations, and etc.. In our furthercurriculum reform, formal education and schooling provides opportunities forstudents to make explicit connections among different disciplines and examineissues from multi-perspectives. Non-formal educational sectors also take role toshare the responsibility to further enhance the connections with variousprofessionals and work cooperatively with the formal educational sector foreducation of people in all generations and walks of life.657
