Among the public transportsystems, buses have an outstanding share of 72%. This fact indicates masstransportation as a striking feature of transportation within the BMA. <strong>The</strong>re arevarious commuting modes in place in the BMA. In terms of approximatecontribution of passengers per kilometer traveled, city buses are the largestcontributors. This transport mode thereby contributes significantly to eitherimprovement or degradation of the urban air quality in Bangkok. Improvement ofurban air quality would be accomplished with appropriate policies on city buses. Inthe same fashion, private cars are the biggest contributors in terms of vehiclekilometertraveled. This indicator signifies that private cars play an important rolein the improvement of urban air quality in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. <strong>The</strong>passenger-kilometers traveled and vehicle-kilometers traveled of different transportmodes in 2005 are shown in Table 4.Table 4: Mode of transport to work trip in greater Bangkok246
