Issuing the《 绿 色 建 筑 评 价 标 准 》by the MOC in June, 2006In addition to these initiatives promoted by the government, various local andoverseas institutions are working to help China promote voluntary market-pullprograms in green buildings that go beyond minimum standards. In particular,overseas assessment scheme such as the LEED, developed by the U.S. <strong>Green</strong><strong>Building</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, are also becoming popular in the market. <strong>Building</strong>s accreditedby LEED are now recognised as the truly sustainable by the local and overseasdevelopers. Recent market penetration of green building labelling schemes hasnow created the momentum to drive the green building in many sectors ofproperties developments. It has created a value of green building that manydevelopers have adopted it for branding of their developments and the corporationitself. In response to this, the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Scienceand Technology are now considering to adapt and translate some of theinternational labelling schemes to fit China's needs. <strong>The</strong> experiences of developedcountries on adoption of green building has suggested that the healthy greenbuilding industry should be supported by effective design, building assessment andlabelling schemes as well as the innovative technologies, put forwarded by theseindustry standards.4. GREEN BUILDING DESIGNSIn fact, the implementation of the energy law and the green building standards inthe market has encouraged the adoption of energy efficient designs and renewableenergy for building design. <strong>Green</strong> or sustainable buildings are now a keyconsideration in new building developments in China. State-of-the-art technologieshave been tested and adopted in this biggest building market. Fig. 2 shows some ofthe sustainable building designs that are becoming prevailing in China.609
