Theme C: Education and Market TransformationIn December 2002, the 57th Session of the United Nations General Assemblyadopted a resolution to declare the United Nations Decade of Education forSustainable Development from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2014 anddesignated the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) as lead agency in the promotion of the Decade of Education forSustainable Development.Governments and organizations around the world are now working on measures toimplement the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in theirrespective educational strategies and action plans.Hong Kong is going through a transitional period. For Hong Kong to survive andprosper in the 21st century, the community needs caring citizens and professionalswho will be team players and effective leaders: citizens who are willing tocontribute to the society and environment that they share. We need to foster anintegration of all these sectors of our community. Our young generation mustexpand their mental horizons and develop their potential as well-roundedindividuals. In addition, in order to have a vision and direction for the future, it isnecessary for young people to understand the past as well as care for thecommunity. This will be reflected in an exploration and research for a newarchitecture and planning.2. REORIENTING EDUCATION TO SUPPORTSUSTAINABILITYESD by nature is holistic and interdisciplinary and depends on concepts andanalytical tools from variety of disciplines. ESD is more than a knowledge baserelated to environment, economy, and society. It also addresses learning skills,perspectives, and values that guide and motivate people to seek sustainable656
