<strong>The</strong>me C: Education and Market Transformationbuilding with parents and students, as well as district leaders (such as District<strong>Council</strong> Members, involved Organizations’ representatives, etc.) providing theholistic support and care to the “continuous” process for the sustainabledevelopment of our community heritage. <strong>The</strong> scale of the design project proposalscan range from colour scheme for repainting a heritage building, conservation ofrural districts and historic relics… to transforming a historical building into arestaurant, turning a historical district into a tourism attraction…etc – alldepending on the needs of individual districts’ and participants’ responses. But itis not the intention of this programme to provide fully detailed schemes forimmediate construction and alterations.In fact the impacts and outcomes of the project are far more reaching and virtuallybenefit and have impacts on all existing and future proposals for conservation ofour community heritage, as it is also the objective of this programme that theexperience, processes and products are readily shared by the other schools, moreprofessionals and the public, as well as providing inspirations to innovative designsand transformation proposals and their future users, thereby assembling valuablesustainable development design database for the policy decision makers andrelated government departments.<strong>The</strong> project provides a model of “community participation design process”undertaken and promoted by schools in Hong Kong involving the activeparticipation of students together with their teachers, parents, alumni, communityrepresentatives and professionals; this would be a powerful, stimulating, andinnovative teaching – learning model as well as promoting capacity building forsustainable development in the community, incorporating the important featuresof:from classroom to the real world: where students’ own neighbourhoodenvironment become the “laboratory” for their intervention;665
