Theme B: Creating a livable, healthy and environmentally viable citiesis found. In this study, ‘a posteriori articulation (search→decide) approach’ wasused. The approach generates a Pareto optimal set (non-dominated solutions)allowing the DM to choose his/her preferred design alternative among the set.The concept of Pareto optimality is explained in Fig 2. A superior solution isreferred to as a non-dominated Pareto and a non-superior solution as a dominatedPareto. In other words, a non-dominated Pareto is always superior to anydominated Pareto. In Fig 2, A, B and C are always superior to A1, B1 and C1 andsuperiority among A, B and C cannot be determined. A, B and C are not dominatedby any other solution, and a set of such non-dominated Pareto solutions arereferred to as a "Pareto optimal set" or "efficient frontier".Figure 2: Pareto Optimality.2.3 Integration of Genetic Algorithm with Pareto OptimalityFig 3 shows the procedure for generating a Pareto optimal set by integrating thegenetic algorithm with Pareto optimality. The generation process is repeatedthrough initial population, fitness sharing, selection, recombination/crossover andmutation.397
