<strong>The</strong>me B: Creating a livable, healthy and environmentally viable citiesHA, where an effort has been made to give the estate an identity of its own.Though standard building types are an efficient and cost effective way of buildingmass housing, there were concerns that public housing estates were becomingmonotonous and were not contributing positively to the urban landscape.Consequently, design teams modified the detailing of the buildings and developedunique colour treatment for each site within an overall colour theme.7.4 Stage 4<strong>The</strong> fourth and final stage was for the construction of five 40 storey New HarmonyOne blocks and two 30 storey Annex Blocks with an increased number of smallflats for single persons and couples, predominantly for the elderly. This stage alsodemonstrates the Housing Authority’s drive towards greater identity for itsbuildings, with more modelling on the facades than those in phase 3 and 4 and adifferent, though sympathetic colour scheme. <strong>The</strong>re is also extensive high qualitylandscaping with a landscaped plaza and a Bamboo Garden which has proved to bevery popular with residents.Figure 11: Master Layout Plan of Kwai Chung Estate8. THE COMPLETED ESTATE<strong>The</strong> redevelopment has allowed for more effective land use and enhanced trafficflow in the area. Residents are now living in modern self-contained flats with amuch improved estate environment, a high standard of landscaping, and amplesitting out areas for the elderly and play facilities for children.
