Theme A: Connecting the Pearl River Delta RegionRESTORATION PROJECT OF EMBROIDERY GUILD HALL,GUANGZHOUSHEN YUEIn the age of transforming economic circumstances between Ming and QingDynasties, Guangzhou merchants have organized trade groups according to tradepractices and traditional ties known as guilds, which in turn to built guild halls.The elaborate Embroidery Guild Hall is the only remaining of one’s kind inGuangzhou. The set up of the guild in 1732 and its subsidence in late 19th centurydemonstrated the evolution of the merchants’ classes and the social morality. Toaccommodate a road project, the Guangzhou Cultural Department utilized aninnovative technology to lift and move this ancient monument by 200m sideways.The overall restoration works also made use of various traditional crafts like bricklying, timber jointing, and repairs of wood / stone carvings. The result was thereappearance of the glory of the Xi-guan merchants.The implementation of the Embroidery Guild Hall’s whole moving conservationproject was based on the protection of foundation displacement before moving,moving technique, lifting technique and detection during the moving process. Atthe beginning, experts from Guangzhou university used "Pendulum" to measurethe starting and stopping many times, they found that the inertial acceleration tendsto zero in the beginning, while the inertial acceleration nearly reached to 3/1000 ofthe gravitational acceleration when it was stopping, Even it was so small, theoverall forward inertial power was still need to overcome, so the experts add hobon it to prevent forward tilting.42
