• Cultivated and grow<strong>in</strong>g area under rice amounts to 4.2 and 7.6 million hectares, whichoccupies 54 percent and 68 percent of <strong>the</strong> national crop area, respectively. It isnecessary to reduce <strong>the</strong> area under rice for crop diversification <strong>in</strong> order to enablefarmers to get higher <strong>in</strong>comes and practice susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculture. Two ma<strong>in</strong> directionsshould be applied to enhance crop diversification: a) to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> trade value of cropproducts by grow<strong>in</strong>g more profitable crops and add<strong>in</strong>g value through process<strong>in</strong>g; and b)to educate farmers of <strong>the</strong> 13 million households <strong>in</strong> Viet Nam <strong>in</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir dietaryhabits by consum<strong>in</strong>g non-rice food crops rich <strong>in</strong> prote<strong>in</strong>, oil, vitam<strong>in</strong>s and m<strong>in</strong>erals.155
