FOREWORDFood and nutrition security, <strong>in</strong>come growth, poverty alleviation, employmentgeneration, judicious use of land, water and o<strong>the</strong>r resources, susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculturaldevelopment and environmental and ecological management/improvement have assumedhigh priority <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> various countries of <strong>the</strong> <strong>region</strong>. <strong>Crop</strong> diversification could be an effectivestrategy <strong>in</strong> this direction. Efforts, <strong>the</strong>refore, need to be made by governments to explorefully <strong>the</strong> potential and prospects of crop diversification to forge congruence of enhancedproductivity, profitability and susta<strong>in</strong>ability.Aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> above backdrop, FAO organized a Regional Expert Consultation on <strong>Crop</strong><strong>Diversification</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>-<strong>Pacific</strong> Region at <strong>the</strong> FAO Regional Office for <strong>Asia</strong> and <strong>the</strong><strong>Pacific</strong>, Bangkok, Thailand, from 4 to 6 July 2000. Experts from concerned countriesparticipated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> workshop. They were able to identify critical issues need<strong>in</strong>g attention.The report of <strong>the</strong> consultation was published as RAP publication No. 2000/14, <strong>in</strong> October2000, highlight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> major recommendations. This publication collates fur<strong>the</strong>r useful<strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of proceed<strong>in</strong>gs.Appreciation is expressed to <strong>the</strong> participants for <strong>the</strong>ir presentation of papers andcontribution to <strong>the</strong> discussions.
