Using national prevalence estimates of mild/moderate and severe learning disabilities
(Department of Health 2001) the estimated number of people with mild/moderate or
severe learning disabilities in each Locality can be produced (Table 61). It is
acknowledged that it is difficult to measure the prevalence of learning disabilities, and
that this will influence the confidence in the prevalence. In addition, the prevalence of
learning disabilities might be higher or lower than the national average. As these figures
are very approximate anyway, they have not been updated with a more recent
population file, as it will make relatively little difference. The following estimates should
be treated with caution.
